Thanks for the hands on with this. A dream of mine was always to own an "original" street fighter 2 arcade but it just seems so impractical for a casual like me. But on the flip side, I don't want to go the Arcade 1up route, it just seems a bit too compromised. A mister FPGA though does seem like the perfect compromise. I'd love to see a video building an entire psuedo-original arcade cabinet around it

The MiSTer is literally the greatest advancement of arcade/console gaming preservation in modern history. Having access to almost limitless games and multiple cores without the worry of compliance of video cables, upscaling, hardware deterioration, etc.. makes this a no-brainer for those who can get one setup. I've heard it looks better on a modern television than a CRT but I believe that's subjective. I have mine on a CRT and it's phenomenal. Great video Ralph!

Hey Anthonym, a couple questions if you don't mind. 1. How bad is the input lag? 2. I assume that there are options to adjust the display for modern 19:9 aspect? ie, it won't stretch it all wide and funky...
@slinger2112
@slinger2112 Ай бұрын
@@jwigley3835 The FPGA solution, properly synthesized, ideally are a cycle for cycle match to the target hardware. Non standard controls (USB controller) may introduce delays and or different display output (HDMI instead of a native analog out, for example). I think some output adjustment is possible, but one of the others here should have direct experience.
@anthonym5395
@anthonym5395 Ай бұрын
@@jwigley3835Exactly. Lag is practically non existent unless it's introduced through wireless controllers. Like Ralph said SNAC dongles are probably best but I use a wireless Sega controller and it works great. The display options can pretty much accommodate everything other than ultra wide displays. Then again none of the arcade machines or consoles from this era ever had anything like that to begin with.

Great video! I think it's worth mentioning that SNAC is really great for things like the zapper as you showed, but when it comes to controllers, you can use a low latency USB adapter like the ones using the daemonbyte protocol (I personally like Timville's triple or 4 adapters) or Reflex (from MiSTer Addons) that only has 1-2 ms of lag and doesn't have the shortcomings of SNAC. SNAC controllers can't operate the menu, cannot be remapped, and cannot be used in other cores. With a normal USB adapter you won't have these issues.

Been loving my Mistercade for over a year. Don’t have the space for multiple dedicated cabs but still wanted an original hardware experience and absolutely did not want a 1up cab. One item to take into consideration, if you run a CRT cab TATE games will not rotate over JAMMA or VGA. You need an hdmi connection for that. So if you booted up the Contra arcade core for this video it would be unplayable without rotating the monitor. To make full use of the mister with a CRT you either need 2 cabs (Tate+Yoko), a CRT connected to hdmi or a cab with an easily rotatable monitor like an Egrate.

Hello, I need help with finding a specific arcade game; if anyone can help, I would greatly appreciate it. There's this street fighting game (its not Street Fighter or Tekken) that starts off with a cut scene of a guy on a roof top fighting enemies; soon, a helicopter shows up and the main character holds his hand out to the new character and ask to join; there's 4 characters, the only names I know are the new character who's name is Unkilled (I think) and the character who I always used who's name is Leonarzo (can't remember exactly) but the new character is all grey and does a spin down attack with his hand and the character I use does a tornado kick; the game starts out on the street, you can pick up crowbars, bats and whatever the enemy drops: plus, you can get a motorcycle and swing that around; you start off on the left side of the and progress right when you kill the required enemies in that area: there are multiple bosses which one is a Doctor Boss with bodies of certain enemies in the shape of a spider and another is a character who uses lasers. It's been since 2005 since I last played this game.

Do they have cores for the mortal kombat games yet? I have an mk4 cabinet with the boards for the others and I really want to replace that all with a mister
@deathr0w
@deathr0w Ай бұрын
no they don't have cores and by what we last saw it's not going to happen even with dual ram same with narc and other games using that hardware.

No they don’t , I would have to do digging into what the current or future plans are for those. A lot of the midway boards based on the Zeus like MK4 are very challenging to reverse engineer. Not sure about the earlier MK stuff to be honest.

@@RetroRalph yeah I bought the 4 cabinet mainly so I didn’t have to mod anything. To make it easy to swap in the older ones 2 and 3 are my go to games. I haven’t had the 4 board in it since I bought it. But it would be super cool to have a mister and be able to easily play all of them if they ever were available as well as all the other great arcade games on my one cabinet

the MARS project is hinting they will have MK, and I thought I heard one of the devs was working on it, but nothing yet.

@@billford171 Yeah. This is what I was hearing. Isn't this the source of all the dual RAM module talk for MiSTer, which was a potential technical blocking point?

Nice video! I like the setup. To level up now you need a 4K OLED and a retrotink 4K! more expensive than the MiSTer but sometimes levelling up costs a bit. Why use a retrotink 4K with a Mister you might be asking.. well the MiSTer can't output native 4K, so the retrotink 4K solves that and it's FPGA 4K scanlines are amazingly good!

You should have a look at RGB-pi too... Might not be an FPGA but can be pretty close to the original hardware as well and cost is pretty cheap compared to an FPGA

@@RetroRalph I will prob make some purists scream but my personal collection runs on original hardware and I also rent for events. and some pcbs are just too fragile or expensive to be worth the hassle. so I just use rgb-pi to keep that nostalgic vibe. I simply build an additional power brick and harness in the cab and re-route the wiring. Never had anyone complaining and I wonder if they even notice.. (I dont false advertise pretending it all runs original hardware though! )... anyway, Even me, I am not sure if I really notice the difference :P anyway! enjoy the test! looking forward to it, maybe I'm just becoming less and less bothered by finding the unicorn feel :P

So if I wanted to throw this in a certain Konami cabinet, this would do the job so I could maybe run certain Konami titles?

Right now the Konami titles are a bit lacking. I would love to see X-Men but they don’t have a core for it …. Yet. TMNT and Simpsons are currently available though 👍🏻. Thanks for watching bro! I hope all is well man!

A MiSTer would have been a great thing to throw in that Ultimate Arcade 2+ you had. Then you would have had all that plus access to older trackball games. The only real downside to MiSTer is how expensive it is compared to other emulation options.
