OK, one can be "honestly" grotesque. But the question is whether grotesque performances are "real" rock (or "rock 'n' roll" as my generation used to call it). I've never been impressed by grotesque displays. And by the way, did you know that the term "rock" arrived very late in the history of rock 'n' roll? For the first 15 years, no one ever used that term. I would say only in the Seventies did people start using the term "rock." If you leave the "roll" out of rock 'n' roll, then it becomes something very rough and harsh, "hard rock."

To determine what rock 'n' roll is or is not, you have to do research. Go back to the beginning (1954) when Alan Freed first brought rock 'n' roll into the world. It's like discovering what Christianity is: you have to go back to the beginning.
