I have naturally hyperextended legs and trust me it's not fun lol I've had really serious injuries from silly falls and whatever. I really wanted to do ballet as a child (have never been able to), but I can tell I would've had a fuckton of injuries.
@noblesetsentimentales3 жыл бұрын
If you have straight knees, embrace them and pay no mind to the current fetishisation of hyperextensions. Straight knees are much more ideal for ballet technique. Misty here had to have plates screwed into her tibia after suffering many horrific injuries. So listen to your teachers and to professionals like Ballet In Form and ignore dangerous fads like the video linked above. It's not worth it.

I just went and saw ABT's The Nutcracker last night with Gillian Murphy as Princess Clara. Gillian Murphy is ALMOST 40 and she literally just gets better with age. She was so perfect.

You can learn a lot through videos :) As long as you're careful not to do anything too technical that might cause injury, that can be a really good place to start.

Alexandra Blake Thank you for your reply! I'm actually going to take a class at a dance studio near me soon!! :-) But I have been watching and doing videos for the past few months or so. I'm worried that it's too late though to get anywhere major flexibility-wise because I'm about to turn 20 (but I mean, I've been doing yoga for awhile now). D-:

That's wonderful; congratulations! Ballet is so fun and rewarding. It's not too late to get flexible. Especially if you've been doing yoga. Certain things like how far you'll be able to get with your turnout and how far you can bend your back do ultimately depend on your bone structure, so after a certain point you won't be able to go any further. But things like that, while pretty, aren't essential for having a solid technique anyway. It's definitely possible to strengthen the arches in your feet in order to go en pointe, and develop a solid technique. There's a great instagram called whitepointeshoes that talks about this if you're interested!

The line of hyperextended legs is very beautiful, but it is definitely more of a challenge to gain strength. Don't give up, gaining strength takes time:-)
