MIT Dorm Room Tour: Simmons Hall (2016)

This is a double in Simmons Hall - not all the rooms look like this! You can stack your furniture however you want, and our room is actually one of the smallest doubles in Simmons. In addition, not all rooms have curvy walls. We have one personal bathroom outside our room, just for ourselves (some rooms have bathrooms inside).

Please I have a question (I'm happy about your victories! :) ) , in my school the grades are in: Insuficient (I) Regular (R) Good (B which Bom is good in portuguese) and MB ("Muito Bom" Very Good) so it's not in numbers and the criterion to get the grades arent also in numbers. How can I calculate GPA?

Hi Jonathas :) I don't know the answer to that, but if you want to apply to MIT you won't need GPA. You can look at the international students' requirements here: mitadmissions.org/apply/firstyear/international/ On my application there was a section for me to write my courses and the corresponding letter grades (I never needed to put GPA), but I think for international students the form may look different - or you can but I, R, B, AND MB for the letters. Your school also needs to send MIT your official transcript, which is a record of your grades.

Wow that's awesome! Good grades, test scores, and a rigorous courseload are definitely important, but don't stress too hard as you are still in your first year! Just focus on doing well in school and dedicating your time to activities you are passionate about (whether academic, volunteer, or other extracurricular) and don't forget to enjoy your high school years because you only get them once

Thanks! I'm looking at the breakdown - it's $4,350 for my double in Simmons, plus an $80 house tax (we're trying to get that lowered) and my specific meal plan of $2,455. There is also an undergraduate student life fee of $156, but I think all undergrads pay that regardless of which dorm you choose.

No, you can live either in a dorm, in a living group, or find your own housing off campus but they all cost money! Some students have their expenses covered through scholarships. MIT also offers free summer housing through some programs if you're staying and participating in those.

I hope you apply and good luck when you do! The room for a one person room in this dorm is $5,895 per semester. It can be a bit expensive but don't worry, because MIT offers a lot of financial aid (most students receive it). You can find out more about aid at sfs.mit.edu/undergraduate-students/

You get to rank the dorms, and then in the first week you get to visit other dorms and try to switch into another one if you don't like the one you were given. If you apply early action you'll be contacted in December (the early action results already came out this year), and if you apply regular, you'll know sometime in March or April? I can't remember, but the deadline to commit to US universities is May 1st, so it'll be some time before then.

I don’t actually go to MIT since I’m a freshman in high school but I was checking it out online and there are two options with different dates depending on if you are doing early admissions or normal admission. Early is supposed to get you a bit extra or like a bit earlier like picking your dorm and things like that. But if you google the dates they differ depending on when you want to send them in

I can't remember the exact dates, but I think the deadline is in December or January! Check the admissions website for information on the deadline and grades - they won't have exact numbers, but they want to see that you'll be capable of doing the work here, so you should have fairly good grades

Yes, things like SAT 1 and 2 scores/ACT scores, AP scores, and GPA (if you're in the US, I'm not sure what the procedure is for international students). You can find all this on the admissions website!

Everyone has the same holidays; there are days off from school for American holidays, and then there is a one-week spring break and a two week winter break. You could also stay home for the month of January, because there's an optional term. And of course there is summer break which lasts a couple months.

Once I went to a conference at Harvard and stayed at Simmons. I shat while I was having a shower in one of the toilets with a bath. I tried to fix the mess by dissolving the shit pieces and let them go down the drain but it turned out not to be the best idea.The bath drained got clogged and the brownish, terribly smelling water started to rise... I thanked God that I had decided to have a shower at 6.00am and no one was in the other shower cabinets, so I basically sneaked out of the bathrooms as fast as I could without anybody seeing me. Corolary #1 of the story: if you gotta take a crap in a bath, do it early. Corolary #2: Harvard staff had to clean my shit.
