Education has gotten to a point where you see an easy question like this, proceed to overthink it, then realize it was actually not that hard after you struggle to approach it. School has traumatized a lot of students into doubting themselves when approaching questions and this is evidence of me being said student. Damn.

Be careful! You also need to make a note that this simplification excludes all cases where x^3 + a^2 y = 0. Of course, in the SAT won’t matter much, but in college it will when you must give handwritten answers.

It's mostly because around the world the education system actually teaches you a thing or two. I'm born and raised mostly in Canada but did a few years of school in Romania, and this problem I can tell you for certain that someone in grade 5 could solve without difficulty, whereas here I'm sure most people who even graduated highschool here might struggle. It's not necessarily that they're flexing, it's more that they're laughing at how stupid NA's education is.

In our times, we used to learn eastern maths up to 5th grade and start algebra in 6th grade. I remember doing this type of algebra in 7th grade. University entrance exam questions usually are not equally complex. 10 % of the questions are silly while another 10% is very hard. Rest of the 80% are distributed within the range. Only a whole question paper can give a clear idea how difficult was the MIT admission at that tine.

Just bring all the numbers from the denominator up, making them negative and then combine with the others. The variables with a positive exponent stays on the numerator and the variables with negative go down to denominator.

for people who do not like factoring, you could compute the gcd of the 2 polynomials using extended euclid algorithm and get the same answer. that's also how a computer would do it (or something similar). also note that it is essential to add that x^3+a^2y is not 0. division or multiplication by a variable is in general not a bijective statement. a*c=a*b not the same thing as b=c b/a=c/a not the same thing as b=c because a can be 0.

To simplify the given expression to its lowest terms, let's start by factoring the numerator and the denominator where possible. The given expression is: \[ \frac{x^6 + a^2 x^3 y}{x^6 - a^4 y^2} \] ### Step 1: Factor the numerator The numerator \(x^6 + a^2 x^3 y\) can be factored by taking \(x^3\) common: \[ x^6 + a^2 x^3 y = x^3 (x^3 + a^2 y) \] ### Step 2: Factor the denominator The denominator \(x^6 - a^4 y^2\) is a difference of squares: \[ x^6 - a^4 y^2 = (x^3)^2 - (a^2 y)^2 = (x^3 - a^2 y)(x^3 + a^2 y) \] ### Step 3: Rewrite the expression with factored forms \[ \frac{x^3 (x^3 + a^2 y)}{(x^3 - a^2 y)(x^3 + a^2 y)} \] ### Step 4: Cancel the common factors The term \(x^3 + a^2 y\) appears in both the numerator and the denominator, so we can cancel it out: \[ \frac{x^3 (x^3 + a^2 y)}{(x^3 - a^2 y)(x^3 + a^2 y)} = \frac{x^3}{x^3 - a^2 y} \] Therefore, the simplified expression is: \[ \frac{x^3}{x^3 - a^2 y} \] This is the expression in its lowest terms.
