Nice video, brings back memories. I used to live in Valley Center in the 80's, part of San Diego Bicycle Club...this was my training ground twice a week. To the top of Palomar..down into Pauma Valley, then up Cole Grade Rd and back home. Such a beautiful climb.

Have you gone back? I am about 43 miles from here and have been pushing in that direction on my ride. This video pumped me up

I haven't been back yet, but I wanna do it again this summer! I'm curious to see my perspective now after training for a few years. I remember it being a great climb

Hey! Great video- I’m planning to ride up Palomar from Encinitas- any links to good route from the coast??? Thx
@MitchBoyer2 жыл бұрын
I haven’t seen for one from Encinitas, but you could probably use this route from Oceanside to help you build one ridewithgps.com/routes/6838234

man, i had a goal to bike up since covid but figured since I only have a mtb, it would wayy too difficult. eventually have to get up there, it is only a 40 min drive from me.

Beautiful ride! How do you carry with you your normal camera? (not the 360° one)
@MitchBoyer3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! The "normal camera" on these rides is a GoPro Hero 9. The image quality is surprisingly good! I stick the GoPro and a little tripod in one of my jersey pockets and pull it out when I need it on the ride.

Considering doing a sea to summit from Oceanside to Palomar Mtn. Gonna need some serious training though.

Btw there are a lot of vistas! They're just not where the observatory is. A great one is at (33.334797, -116.919957), it's a fire lookout tower.

How did you find the cars on it? I'm in San Diego county, and trying to build myself up for that big climb. Some local bike shop folks say they love riding it, but only do it in big group rides because that's when it gets blocked off just for cyclists, and has highway patrol protection. I'm not fast enough for a big group event; just stubborn and happy to take a break to enjoy the view on the way up a few times. Apparently the fancy car people like taking the switchbacks entirely too fast... and that's scary as heck. All the bad stereotypes about SoCal drivers are true. Ick. Would it be rude to ask a family member to tail me in their car with a "don't pass fast - cyclist ahead" sign on their rear?

There were not a lot cars the day I went. Its was a Friday at the beginning of August. I think I was passed by maybe 4 or 5 cars on the climb. The road leading to the climb was very busy, but I didn't ride on it, I started the ride form the Taco place at the bottom of the hill. Hope that helps!
