This is what a true performer looks like. Alberta's voice control, her command of the microphone, her stage presence. Everything about her is polished and perfect! She makes me a better singer and a better person just by listening.

I loved her story, She was a Nurse working at New York City's Coney Island Hospital, I once worked in the E.R. there !!! then they realized she was a bit too old and retired her, even though she did her job well, then she went back to singing, this is her after ! She was so great !!!! I will always admire and love her !

I also used to see her at the Cookery in the Village in the early 1970s. Thanks for posting these videos, she was remarkable and through the magic of video and You Tube, her music lives on. Plus she is right - save some of your money to keep your personal strength and integrity!

A great performance of a bluesy vaudeville favorite. The lyric reads as true in today's hard times as it did back in the twenties and on into the great depression.

Jimmy Cox-whose daughter, "Baby Cox" recorded memorably with Duke Ellington's orchestra-did not write this specifically for Bessie, but she made the definitive recording of it.

BTW, Gerald Cook was no gentleman, he was a crook who stole all of Alberta's money (she had amassed quite a sum) and jewelry. Then he moved to Europe and drank himself to death. Alberta was a sweetheart as well as an amazing, versatile artist.
