I grew up in that same hood and I felt Iike I had a mostly normal life. Not that much different then what you viewed on Moesha. I could still remember black doctors, entrepreneurs, judges, lawyers, teachers and school administrators living in South East San Diego. I I remember going to the black owned bank near near bay vista, black owned markets and cleaners. So when Nick Cannon and Mitchy Slick talk about how ruff Bay Vista was I feel like I lived a total different world. But I was growing up in SESD as a black girl and they were black boys.

not having a choice basically means- you will be affiliated regardless of actually being a member, or growing up in a certain neighborhood. for example, if someone at school asks “where you from?” and you aren’t a member of a gang, they’ll proceed to ask “where you live?”. your residence kinda signifies who you more than likely know or may hang around. so if you dont bang but stay near Crenshaw& Slauson etc, then you’re seen as a Rollin 60 Crip or an affiliate that more than likely know some crips anyway.
