Usually (even today) in old times people of western region (Rajasthan and Sindh) people used to pronounce alphabet "S" as "H" as in their language "Prakrut" there was no sign for "S" so they started calling people living in these vast regions as Hindu which means residents of Sindhu valley. Because this valley had been inhabited much prior to the other river basins, people lived here first and then slowly n gradually moved further inside towards east and north side, made colonies and villages nearby rivers clearing forests as they found fertile lands there. Thus, the basins of Ganga, Yamuna, Narmada and other big rivers were discovered and people shifted there as per their choice and convenience. But their original race and faith remained same as "Hindu" always..... till 9th century AD, when the first Islamic attack was recorded.

What we follow nowadays is called HINDUISM otherwise what we (hindu people) call it is SANATAN DHARMA. It's like chinese calling our country India as Tianzhu but we call our country by it's original name Bharat. The term Hinduism is proposed by Persians when they came into our area they call it because of sindhu nadi (indus river) and That's how We're known HINDU from SINDHU and INDIA from INDUS. But that's not how we call ourselves. It's just some name called by Persians to refer us and now it is internationally known as india and hinduism otherwise everything is same. Sindh can be called birth place for hindu because that's how we got our name but the religion practices we follow was before all this. That's why religion HINDUISM (new term for Sanatan dharma) is called the oldest living religion
