Nagaland attained statehood on December 1, 1963. However, the Konyak or Nagas in general, have been domesticating the Mithun since time immemorial, utilizing it for meat in significant events such as weddings, jubilees, and family gatherings for generations. The designation of the Mithun as the state animal by the Nagaland government is a recent development, and it's worth noting that this animal is not endangered.
