He was eighth in the ranking for the Ballon d'Or (now FIFA World Player of the Year) in 1965, but that was two days before his memorable match with Belgium, a play-off for the World Cup 1966, where he scored two goals and Bulgaria eliminated the big favorites. Could have been ranked higher. Greats like Pele, Eusebio, Albert and Bobby Charlton admired him! In practice, his career ended in 1966 - after that he was destroyed by injuries in communist Bulgaria, because there was simply no way to stop him and he was already the mega star of Bulgarian football. If there was no dictatorial regime in Bulgaria back in the day, led by the USSR of course, he would have played for Milan in his prime, and Milan were the strongest team back then. I could definitely see him winning the Ballon d'Or at least once!

Not necessarily true they were going to allow him to play in Italy but he chose to stay at levski. He even said I was born with levski and I will die with levski and he did but much too soon. Rip
