My favorite Mitski performance. I hear teenagers talk about crying to her songs but the studio cuts never did for me. But the fairy lights, the blurry iPhone shots and her acoustic guitar make those music real, and most importantly, warm. It’s the sound of a young woman pouring her heart out to something she loves, even if the songs retains its depressive nature. I particularly love this rendition of “First Love / Late Spring” because it felt like the rays of sunshine traveling through the summer breeze. A state of bliss despite the subject. It made me gain a newfound appreciation for the song, and how it reflects what Mitski once always wanted to be. I cried all the way through after that. She seemed like she was really comfortable and happy with the life she had as a small indie musician. Laughing with the listeners, talking about her best friend as she plays I Will. A quote from a Rolling Stone article in 2021: “I came from a DIY punk scene where there are a bunch of white-guy bands, and they got to just put out music, go on tour, and then go home. I thought that applied to me.” At this stage, she has likely passed the stage of playing bar shows where random clienteles would scream at her for her lyricism. The audience appreciates her, it’s interactive and cozy in a level she seems to be most comfortable with. I suppose that she at this point was enjoying this idyllic reality, where all she really had to do is perform, release music and go home and rest. It hasn’t reached the point of excessive, heart-wrenching capitalistic exploitation; which is the unfortunately the point that she has reached with Be the Cowboy. As an longtime listener I emphasize with her desire to remain human in this system that attempts to take everything from her. In some way, I don’t think she is meant for this level of fame. This doesn’t mean that she doesn’t deserve her current level of recognition; it simply means that Mitski’s ambitions as an artist conflicts with the way that the industry is run. There are some that is fully ok with the commercialization of themselves, but some just aren’t. And it eats them up and they ultimately accepts defeat. That’s where Mitski’s at now. As listeners, I think we often don’t think about how our attitudes towards our favourite artists leaves an immense impact on them as a person rather than the artist’s brand. I find it hard now to comment stuff like “I love x person more than I love my life.” It’s unfair, it’s not a relationship they consented to, but the industry, in the exchange of fame and notoriety, also forces people like her to give more and more of their personhood to fuel the quality of the product being sold. It’s almost like a given, even though it shouldn’t. The system categorized Mitski into labels that she attempts to liberate herself from, and those labels includes “Asian Women of Colour” and “Sad Girl.” We know better than that. The white girls on TikTok knows better than that. Why did those TikToks dilute the ever expanding concepts of her songs into “sad vibes?” Because she is viewed as a object of consumption, with no formal social contract, hence people can have the ability to mold her into a decoration for white aesthetics. That is the natural consequence of that. Why can’t general music audiences afford her the same level of intellectual thought and formal respect as other many other white artists who don’t have to go through the same excruciating process of nuance erasure? We as consumers should think more about how capitalism distorts the relationships we have with other people, as many of the dynamics we face today are a part of the consumerist economy where people is up for sale. Fans of the western music industry needs to establish the level of social awareness that K-Pop fans has been developing over the past years, because in many ways, it’s no different. I am just another Asian immigrant trying to find my place in the world. And I am trying my best to maintain the human as I navigate through the economy. If Mitski remaining small means that I would never know about her existence, I am ok with that. I don’t claim her, she isn’t a god, she is not my mother figure, she is that awesome indie girl that I have a few record of and that’s all. I can go back to this performance and see myself in a time where that simple dreams of warm intimacy and privacy was possible before it’s not.

I've read where she's talked about not being good at guitar but playing anyway and I know to play a burning hill she tunes up her e and d strings... so seeing her play overhand in this performance is really cool. I've never seen or heard of it til Mitski and I know she's not the first but she plays for the necessity for the music. She's also said she needs to still be able to play if all the technology and things and extras were taken away. Legend.

There’s something that seems so special about this set. It feels so intimate. I’ve been lucky to see Mitski live a few times, and while I loved those experiences, there’s almost nothing like a cozy acoustic set with a small, but very engaged audience, especially when singing songs that are so personal and emotional.

I will is such a beautiful and wonderful song, telling, almost screaming at someone that you’ll be their safe person, safe place, and their everything because you truly love them and don’t want them to feel as if they’re less than anyone else is the best thing you can give someone, your love, your compassion, your bravery, you want to give them everything you can ever give them and at full capacity because you truly and utterly love them. Mitski is an astounding writer, she must’ve been in love to come up with that song and I will forever be grateful for it because it gave me the courage to reciprocate my feelings towards someone, even if it ended up with me giving my all and them not trying. Mitski is truly wonderful.
