//SHE'S DIGGING FOR A GOOD ENDING TO THIS SONG BECAUSE SHE HAD BEEN WRITING THIS SONG SINCE COLLEGE// Was it the first song written for the album? “Yes, well it was the first song I started to write. I started to write it in college; it’s the song I’ve taken the longest to write. It had become my White Whale - Moby Dick reference - where I couldn’t get it right. Every time I thought I’d finished it it just didn’t feel right, so I kept changing it. It’s gone through many iterations; probably people who went to school with me, who’ve been in seminars with me, are like "wait, I heard that somewhere…” And then I finally got to a point where I was like “you know what, I need to end this, I’m never gonna be happy with it so let me finish it.” So I did."

i don't know who this is going to reach, but i really want to share my interpretation of this song. my name is abi and i was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder in this past year. before my diagnosis, i was showing all of the obvious and not obvious signs of the disorder and i went through extreme periods of mania and depressions, never knowing why. i had a really good friend group that i relied on for support, but things started to get out of control. i was out of control. i couldn't control my thoughts or emotions at all. they were all that i had. when i interpret this song, i hear about this girl who is going through these episodes and splitting. her number one is all that she has and that is all she will ever have, but she knows it isn't healthy. when she says, 'you've/i've turned down every hand that has beckoned me to come,' i believe she is trying to say that at first, the friendship was amazing. my friends were there for me, but now they aren't there anymore and when she says it again, i interpret this in the idea that now she is almost done asking for them. she's fed up with how they've been treating her, and when she says she will continue to turn down other hands, i think she's traumatized, she will keep turning down other opportunities and continue to latch as a form of consistency, even while pushing her friends away. when mitski says, 'feel it bubbling from below,' i personally relate to this lyric. it's exactly what an episode of mania feels like for me. it's sudden, but bubbling up until it reaches the surface. it can be interpreted in the idea that she's been pushing down these feelings about her friends, and knowing that she's the mentally ill and there's nothing that she can do about, so she will keep going. continuing on, she says, 'and hear the harmony/only when it's harming me,' i believe that is could be in reference to the final realization that she's the problem when she is so deep into being hurt in the first place. she's in pain. everyone's gone and she can't push down her feelings anymore. lastly, her friends are finally gone. she is alone. 'but i will be the one you need/ the way i can't be without you/ i will be the one you need/ i just can't be without you,' she will change everything about herself in order to be with her friends just one last time, to be apart of it one more time. when everything was okay.
@smallpotato54453 жыл бұрын
Just wanted to give you hugs 🥲🥲🥲🥲🥲 Also me listening to this song and feeling like “Though I'm a geyser // Feel it bubbling from below // Hear it call, hear it call // Hear it call to me // Constantly” definitely feels like a (hypo)maniac episode coming on (bipolar here), I think this song is significant to me because I’ve been trying really hard to resolve my relationships and friendships rationally, but it makes me feel dishonest, yet I feel like I really shouldn’t burden people with my mental illnesses. And yet Mitski is just so honest about the feelings of being dependent and needy in a very vulnerable way, it just makes me feel like those “irrational and intense” emotions aren’t going anywhere despite my best effort, and they deserve me making space for them, and this whole song just made me really wanna cry in general 🥲🥲🥲 Sorry it’s been difficult on you, hugs 🥲🥲😭
