Just wanted to say that 1) this song is amazing on every level. 2) it can be interpreted as a melancholic love song while still holding the original meaning intended by the author. Songs can have multiple interpretation. Personally when I found out the original intent of the lyrics I was shocked at how cleverly disguised it is, and I think it’s so cool that it can be so ambiguous. It’s in the beauty of the song itself imo :)

Its probably more demeaning to mitski to insist that this isnt a love song at all and is only about her struggles with being a woc in america and i feel like it just puts her and her music in a different box instead of just letting it be what it is and doing away with it

is the song not synced to the video? it seems like the beginning of the video should be silent rather then the end so that "reached out the car window trying to hold the wind" is synced with the hand outreaching from the car? i could be wrong tho lol and its supposed to be all symbolic

Everyone just so you know , mitksi wants you to interpret her songs in any way, she said in an interview not an while ago, and an long time ago, to just think what the songs mean, so if you think this song is cute it's okay, if you think the song is about race, it's okay, everyone has there interpretations , and y'all should respect that.

@@Papsy ofc i agree with this. you should defiantly acknowledge the song writers intentional meaning but its also okay to change the meaning* to make it more relatable to you. *Obviously I mean change it /in your head/. not change it, sorry, i cant think of a better term. ill use an example to help. you can say that TO YOU it is a love song and when you listen to it, you associate the lyrics with love. BUT you have have have to understand and accept the true meaning for what it is. so dont go around telling people that its a love song especially since the meaning is about a sensitive topic like race. i think this can also apply to songs about homophobia, transphobia, racism, r*pe, etc etc. so: dont get mad at peoples interpretations of songs. and those people have to respect the true meaning.

This song is definitely about being poc but i personally relate to it. I am neurodevelopmentally disabled (moderate autism among a lot of other things). I never fit the standard, the norm. I am not someone's "type." people have to take care of me. I am more seen as a bother than a person sometimes, so i guess i relate to this as I want to be neurotypical, if that makes sense?

I can kinda see why people think of it as a love song and im definetly not defending those people but with lyrics like "i love everybody because i love you" and "i love it when you call my name" those are definetly things people would say whilst in love which could lead them to think that of the song in my opinion.

hot take: you can enjoy a song and not relate to it. you can appreciate a song for every part of it and realize that it ISN'T about you. i think we all have the media literacy to enjoy something and also understand that the song isn't about you or your experiences, and isn't intended to be something you relate to. i think that interpreting this as a love song not only detracts from the meaning mitski intended to convey, but also disrespects it. interpreting this song that way is exactly why mitski made this song; she's trying to show how painful it is to admire someone knowing that she'll never fit into the eurocentric white standards that they glorify, and taking THAT meaning and turning it into "oh she loves them so much, i love my partner too!!!" is... incredibly disappointing. i think it isn't hard to notice that it's specifically not women of color saying something about how "you can interpret a song however you want!!!" sure you can, but that doesn't change the fact that you are intentionally altering the meaning only because you feel like you're missing out. i'm saying this from a person of color, but also someone who isn't a woman of color either. i can't exactly relate to her experience because, quite simply, women suffer so much more pressure to fit into eurocentric beauty standards than men do. women are expected to perform and present, while men "get to be picky", get to choose and not worry about being chosen. but i can still appreciate her song and recognize that even though this song isn't intended to resonate with me, it's a beautiful song with a beautiful message that would be disrespectful to ignore. just because you can't relate to what a song, or any piece of art, is about, it doesn't mean you should change it to fit your narrative. there are more than enough love songs out there, and definitely not enough songs for women of color struggling to bridge the gap between self-acceptance and feeling attractive in a eurocentric, white male gaze-oriented world. leave this one alone. :)
