i guess u are reading too much into this song it sounds to me that is just about a relationship... about the sad girl trope, mitski kind of talked about it in "working for the knife", how pretty much everyone including her fans threw her into a sad girl stereotype even tho most of her songs aren't sad at all, they are just raw and intense. i guess something most people dont get in her songs is that, the sadness she talks about is always somewhat self aware, and she doesn't hold to the sadness, it just flows. that's why for me her songs aren't sad, they just are filled with emotions. there is always a more positive side if you read into it. calling her a sad girl is just flattening the meaning of her words, almost belittling them

How can she capture certain sentiments so well? you and your loved one buy a lamp together (or a couch, or a table, something like that) and then it's 'our lamp' in 'our place'... not like two roommates moved in with each one's furniture. and then the love ends, perhaps, with only the evidence of what was once love. still shining. god i love this song

This album has helped me through the entirety of 2022 and 2023. It’s been my number one album before meeting my actual first boyfriend, and now at its ending. It’s been soothing me as I grew and got hurt over and over again. Now, as that relationship of a year and almost three months is about to end, I look back and realize…this album represents growth. Not only did Mitski evolve musically, with more synthesizers and sounds involved in her songs, but also as a person. This is the first time an album of Mitski ends in a positive note, where the narrator left their toxic relationship, and for good, all she can do now is look back and remember that memory as that, only a memory, not something she has to go through again and again in this endless cycle. She can now be free. Or well, that’s at least the way I see it, now that things are ending with my relationship. Thank you Mitski, you helped me when I had no one, I hope someone helped you too when you were there.

I think this song is about a relationship where one of them is losing hope while the other keeps it on fire for both of them (that’s our lamp). So, it is a bond that is already broken, because one is losing hope and the other knows it and is insecure about it. “you say you love me, I believe you do _but_ (...) you just don’t like me, not like you used to”. also, every time she screams, it’t like a heartbreaking cry. “cause you just don’t like me... not like you used to” (cries) ... “that’s where you loved me” (cries)
