the comments don’t fully understand the complexity of this song. it’s not simply about self sabotaging your relationships, it’s also about being the only one that tries and cares. the person she’s talking to doesn’t make a mistake BECAUSE they’re not as invested as her ("ill be the water main that’s burst and flooding//you’ll be by the window, only watching”). the song literally ends with a line "and [you] make me the only heartbreaker//so i’ll be the only heartbreaker" which i interpret as them both being responsible for the separation, just in different ways. also in this context heartbreaker can have a second meaning - her breaking her own heart.

I watched this video with my partner upon release, it's sad because we parted ways two days ago. We had tickets to a Mitski concert next year in Belgium, now it makes sense that I'll end up traveling alone and crying my guts out in the concert. I told him once that this song seemed perfectly fitted for him, as he always felt like the villain in our story when we had problems, and he carried so much guilt within. After finding out that he cheated on me for 6 months, when we had been dating for 6 years, it finally makes sense. I can only say I loved him until the end, while he burned all our trust, becoming the only heartbreaker indeed. Sorry for oversharing!! i've read many interpretations of the song and i enjoy seeing other people's view so i might aswell express my own. i see it as someone who tries to detach themself from whom they deeply love, saying to themself that they' break their loved one's heart, they won't depend on the other anymore, they don't need them, they are and deserve better, even thought fully knowing that they wouldn't be able to actually say that. so they imagine these scenarios to make themselves feel stronger and empowered while being the complete opposite in real life. they hope to break the other's heart in order to not be the only one suffering in the relationship. i apologize for my not so good english but i wanted to express my opinion on this since I haven't seen anyone with a similar one

I relate to your understanding of the song. I ended 5 months ago playing a game of mouse and cat game with my ex who I loved so much, it caused me depression. I no longer wanted to be a second option despite all my love for her. She is a beautiful girl who can easily gets anybody she wants in a finger snap(she has already). She is a heartbreaker as she attracts attention from ladies very easily .I can't complain zz I attract both but I am not playing by external traits and so, I had to let her go... It sometimes hurt but I don't want to be a second option as I deserve better and she proved me she wasn't up to the task fully. So that song holds an even depper meaning to me now...

Wow this music video really looks like A Burning Hill's first verse: "And I've been a forest fire I've been a forest fire And I am the fire and I am the forest And I am a witness watching it I stand in a valley watching it And you are not there at all" It's crazy that Mitski sees how loneliness not only is a pain, but a condition that makes her the entire world. It's kinda ultrarromantic, but a different click. Her emotions don't make the surroundings hostile. Mitski IS the surroundings, because she knows/feels she's all there is. She's the world that she involuntarily burns entirely and makes art out of the fire. But as she is all, the process burns her own self.

I don't know how I haven't seen this till just now but I cried. This song and video is exactly what I felt when when I left my last relationship. I was lost in this fantasy that things could work and they believed it too but I was falling apart. I couldn't help them I couldn't help my self.
