i adore everything about this. i was raised in the roman catholic church and i think my biggest issue with the church is the dehumanization of biblical figures. yes, jesus was the son of god and the way i was raised we were taught to view them as one in the same, but i find it much more meaningful to view jesus as a man, a human with human feeling and thoughts. I often find myself wondering if he was scared or even sad because of the things predetermined for him. He was just a child who had the literal weight of the world on his shoulders. Do you think he mourned the life he could of had? i also think of judas, and the way he lived, or rather died, to regret betraying jesus. did he truly want to betray him, did he really of the gift of free will in doing that. the most gut wrenching aspect of their story is the kiss. judas betrayed jesus through such a loving and intimate gesture, why would he do that if his betrayal was out of hate. you portrayed them perfectly, the pain in judas' eyes was so accurate. this truly embodied the almost "forced" nature of judas' betrayal. beautiful depiction of this story, each characters' expressions were so moving. thank you for making and sharing this.

No because I'm thinking about the fact that Jesus HAD to die on that cross, he HAD to be betrayed. Did Judas try to justify it to himself? When he kissed Jesus did he think "If not me then who else?" The more I allowed myself to fall into it the more it made me realise so many things. I've been debating being involved in the christian community and I honestly think you've convinced me? It was all written, and I think the point is that even though Judas knew he was 'not a star' (as Mitski beautifully puts) he knew Jesus wanted him there and knew his life had purpose with him. I laughed when I first saw the thumbnail, but then I decided to give this a shot…and now I’m dumbstruck. First off, love how you drew not only the halos as circles behind their heads (the same way they’re depicted in art from the Middle Ages), but Jesus’s features actually resemble a lot of his depictions. Especially his profile. And while this might be intended to be read as mutually reciprocal, I can’t help seeing the kiss as Judas trying to express the depth of his love despite his own feelings of inadequacy, and Jesus smiles, but just feels the same love he feels for everyone. And it’s that realization that breaks Judas, when he realizes he’s never going to be loved more than Jesus already loves everyone else. And GOD, that ending. Not surprising, of course, based on the story, but…that parallel with Mary holding her son’s body. And then, the cross. It feels like a watering down of Jesus as a person and his transition into a symbol of human ideals, the beginning of a mindset that, in glorifying him, erased the humanity that animatics like these are brimming with. It’s like a second death. Judas can’t go anywhere without this reminder that the man he loved was not loved by everyone as a man, but revered as a savior of sin. And Judas’s sin killed the man of Jesus and replaced him with a shining, hollow, unattainable idea. Unyielding and frozen in time. An unreachable cross, always fixed just above his head. Always hanging over him, looking down in indifference. And when Judas hangs, no one looks up at him with love. Because he killed the man who loved everyone, so now there is no one left to love him.

I'm not religious anymore, though I was raised Catholic. I always found myself disagreeing with people on this back when I still was religious. Because surely, just based off of what we know, Jesus absolutely forgave Judas. He definitely felt bad for him at the very least. Though historically, the Church has been rather unforgiving of Judas, and I don't really believe in an afterlife per se, I'd like to think that Jesus would still forgive him after all. If he knew it had to happen ahead of time(and honestly even if he didn't) I don't think he would hold it against Judas. Maybe I'm just too naive when it comes to this stuff, but if the whole premise of the religion is that God is merciful and all loving, then surely, there's hope for even people like that. I've always loved the Mark Twain quote, "But who prays for Satan?" I think this animatic gives off similar vibes, that is, humanizing those who we tend to think of as otherworldly. It reminds us, they were just people too I never much was one to be in your face about religion back when I considered myself religious, but I think stuff like this makes me love Jesus a hell of a lot more than I did when I was being taught he was perfect and the son of God
