Competitions are everywhere, and leaders are often defined by whether they win or lose. To succeed, they can’t just do it all by themselves. A key challenge for leaders is building and managing teams that win consistently over time. Where can we find inspiration on this challenge? Leaders of high-performing sports teams, who use a mix of both art and science to win. With this live event from MIT, we invite you to learn from and engage with world-renowned experts in sports and leadership, Ben Shields and Shira Springer.
Ben Shields is a Senior Lecturer at the MIT Sloan School of Management. His work as a teacher, researcher, and practitioner focuses on digital transformation in the sports, media, and entertainment industries. Among his teaching at MIT, he developed and teaches the open enrollment program Data-Driven Teams: The Art and Science of Winning. He is the author or coauthor of three books and several MIT Sloan case studies, including a case on Formula 1. Prior to MIT, he was the Director of Social Media at ESPN.
Shira Springer is a Lecturer at the MIT Sloan School of Management. Her teaching and research focus on leadership communication, sports strategy, and storytelling. She’s also a journalist. Her columns, features, and essays appear in a variety of publications, including the Sports Business Journal and The New York Times. In addition, she has coauthored MIT Sloan case studies on the National Women's Soccer League and Athletes Unlimited.
