Van Djik’s positioning, calmness and timing are so good its unnatural. Most defenders would have panicked and made a bad decision.

I honestly don't remember the last time i got dribbled past, but i can give you my own tips from my experience. Firstly, never underestimate the opponent. Dont over commit to the tackle to the point that you can't recover. Keep an open mind that the dribbler can pass you in many different ways, either by nutmeging, pace, lob and so on. Keep a reasonable distance, about 5 metres on a full pitch and 3 metres on 5-aside or volleyball size pitch, so that you can pick up in case he wants to run with the ball. Wait for him to shift first. This is where you have to focus on your positioning maintaining inside to goal and pushing the attacker out. Only jump in if he loses slight control of the ball. Don't try to jump in because he is already expecting you to by teasing you. The idea is to delay the attack so that your teammates can cover spaces and possibly make the tackle for you, not necessarily you taking the ball yourself.
@trple2
@trple2 2 жыл бұрын
If you've never been dribbled past you may be yielding too much ground to begin with. Getting drribbled past shouldn't happen much but if it's never then you may be missing opportunities to challenge and...the bigger problem...allowing too much unimpeded movement. Most people overchallenge so you're probably fine but keep it in mind.
@realtalkwithphil
@realtalkwithphil 2 жыл бұрын
@@trple2 Most of the time a player gets dribbled past is because they lose concentration, or other factors that are beyond your control as your teammates bumping into you, or because they don’t have the calmness and adequate knowledge of the game to know where they’re supposed to be at the right time. I’m not saying i can’t get ran past, but getting dribbled past is different. It means that i am being bamboozled (tricked) by the opponent’s skill. There is a lot of calculations that goes into making challenges, it first starts with your body shape and positioning, because in the end, your opponents are going for your goal.
@trple2
@trple2 2 жыл бұрын
@@realtalkwithphil That is mostly true and I think we're saying sort of the same thing but it also comes down to your own risk assessment. If you are never getting dribbled past then you are probably yielding too much space and conceding too much ground. It may make sense to challenge more. Not so that you are getting dribbled past all of the time but if it's "never" then obviously you are missing opportunities to challenge.

@@trple2 Yeah, i get your point. 💯💯💯💯 My most comfortable position on the field is in Centre Midfield, sometimes i play as a defensive midfielder and other times in Centre Back. My idea of defending is to protect the defense which starts from smart pressing and not giving your opponents spaces to play through you. If you’re standing in the right place, he would hardly dare bring the ball to you, but rather seek for ways to go around you. What’s your idea of defending?
@trple2
@trple2 2 жыл бұрын
@@realtalkwithphil My main theory is to make the other team be forced to make decisions and errors. The more they are forced to do and the more complicated it is the more chance for them to screw up. Mostly I like giving them a lot of space and time. Not much aggression. Let them make their own mistakes by not giving them anything easy. Test if they have the discipline to consistently make the correct decision. That applies to on ball defense as well. We're saying the same thing, I think. As I've gotten older I've become a fan of doing things to try to get into their heads a bit. Super aggressive pressure mixed in just to speed up their thinking and throw off their mind and patterns. Most teams/people are too aggressive to begin with so if I can encourage them to be even more so it's even more disorienting against a defense designed to not give up anything easy.

Closest situation I ever had to this, during a game we got caught way too far upfield and our lines were totally broken. My teammate missed a tackle and I was actually in midfield behind the 2. I put the hammer down and ran through the middle. The fullback on my right hand side was about tackle dude running with the ball. I'm caught perfectly in between them. The pass comes in and I lay out. I manage to get possession while sliding and stand up, playing it back up field the other way. I literally waited until the last second and reached out with everything i had. An inch further downfield and it would have been 1 v 1 with our keeper

had a soccer coach who insisted this be defended as allowing the attacker to dribble in while covering the passer. Made no real sense to any of us. One advantage is at least the goalie knew for sure what was happening. The disadvantage, of course, was it was a 1 v 1. We fought him to death on it.

I am obviously not as good as Van Dijk, but shouldn't he weight the distance more to the ball carrier? If he is a foot or 2 closer to Sissoko then he might get the block in. If the pass happens then it will take more time to get to Son but the pass and reception will also take longer before he can get the shot off.
@trple2
@trple2 2 жыл бұрын
Depends on the situation. I sort of agree with you. Would like the player to at least be forced to make a pass if that pass can take enough time and be far enough away to not allow a 1 timer or unimpeded dribbling by the recipient. At the same time if the defender had the attacker on his weak foot, and could forece him to an angle, and knew he could trick him into a pressured shot AND if the keeper was decent then it's possibly worth the risk of allowing a shot to go up so easily.

Try to duplicate the concepts, but I never recommend your teammates to leave a fullback in a 2v1 situation. The midfielders need to provide the support in such an occasion. Anyway, if this happens, try to duplicate the same concepts while keeping in mind that it’s better to push the opposition to the line

This video exactly shows why You can't compare defenders with Stats Defending is not all about tackles interceptions you made It is way more than that which just can't be explained by Stats of any kind
@trple2
@trple2 2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. Stats are completely misleading in many context. A truly great defender does so many little things to keep a defense organized that it's hard to evaluate in quick bursts of information. As a starting point to identify the best defenders you'd want to look at defenses that work cohesively as a unit. But even then, it could be coaching or a series of smart players. You can be an amazing defender and have such idiots around you that it makes sense to be overly agressive in certain scenarios. I'm not how sure you evaluate it other than sort of just knowing by a combo of evaluations. Some stats should show up...I mean, if the opponent scores less when the guy goes to a new team or is in the game that should tell you something.
