I am getting ready to tackle this on the 2003 Mitsubishi Montero Sport LS I bought used from a private party. It's a LOT more complicated than I'd realized, but Owen has done a superb job of explaining every step. Thanks, Owen!

Mine was doing weird stuff, starts and runs for 60 seconds then turns off and wont start! found the water pump leaking at rear and water was running down over the crank sensor from what we can work out, that will shut off engine. hope this all works out good! The crankshaft turns twice for every turn of the camshaft. The timing marks on the crankshaft will move farther making it look like it's off .

Hi, Mr Owen L. i owned a 1999 Mitsubishi Montero Sport LS, with about 157,000 miles approximately, first there is a squeeking noise during steering and when i shake down the front part of the car . Can you tell yours truly as to why and what can i do to fix. if it s the control arm, or the rubber bushing? thank you very much

Very helpful man! Thank you for this Owen. FYI, I am about to purchase a 1995, 3.0L, V6. Needs a new timing belt and water pump so I am going to have to tow it to my Dad's garage so we can do the work. Items I plan on purchasing ahead of time to have on hand during the process: Waterpump/timing belt replacement kit, thermostat, serpentine belt and maintenance manual. Any other critical stuff you think I should go ahead and replace while I have the front end open?

Owen what sealant did you use to mount the water pump? Also did you buy an OEM crank sensor or just one off Amazon/ebay? Any other sealants/rtv that you used? I'm gonna do mine in the next week or two. This video is so much help. Thanks! 🤙

Thanks for sharing the video! Quick question as far as where you buy parts from rockauto or partsouq, do you get certain things from rockauto vs partsouq?
@owen_03montero

I get all the super important stuff from partsouq that is oem but for stuff that isn't super important like spark plugs, valve cover gaskets, wires, accessory belts, I get from rockauto. But you can get oem stuff from rockauto too. Look for denso, ngk, ntk, mahle

I have 95 montero 3.0 L v6 sohc and the crank shaft shifted to the right of the timing mark for the pulley by about a half inch. The cams are aligned properly. Your pulley was slightly to the right of the marking. How did you get it back in alignment before pulling all the accessory belts. Also, when you loosened the crank bolt with the impact. How did you lock the pulley in place so it would not spin? Thanks
@owen_03montero
@owen_03montero Жыл бұрын
So i loosened it with an impact gun and you can move the crank back to timing mark. And to torque it you need a tool to hold it

Where is the part you can just quickly take off to inspect your timing belt, is that the little cutout piece on the left plastic section at 11.15? And is it accessible to take off and check without removing anything?

I'm original owner of a 2002 Mits Montero Ltd 3.5L engine that stopped running as I accelerated to pass a car, earlier this year. I had it towed to a shop and they gave a general opinion that a thing belt was the problem and didn't do a diagnosis. Knowing the potential expense, if true, I haven't gone any further on diagnosis and assumed they are correct. It's been sitting for several months, as I weigh the pros and cons on fixing it. Do you know how I can verify the problem or is the engine a write off. The replacement engine on eBay is $1,999, $2,300 with shipping, then core charge and cost of replacement. 226K on engine, half that on recent replaced trans and transfer case. The Mits is in great body and interior shape and is a great car to drive. Any suggestions? .
@owen_03montero
@owen_03montero 2 жыл бұрын
Only way to see if the engine is ruined is take the front apart and see if the timing belt snapped or jumped teeth. Once you have the front off you can see if the belt is okay and if it is then see if the timing marks line up. If the belt and timing marks are fine I would do a compression check

@@owen_03montero Thanks for the feedback. I suspected that, hoping for an easier solution so I will hold on to it until I can check. Nothing to lose, at least then I will know and make a fix or salvage disposal.

@@yourchava I got involved in other things and it sat for a year. I bought a 2018 Subaru Impreza sport My apt management had it towed away. I just couldn't deal with it and let it go. Sad to say that. It had an issue with the a/c heater core causing water to flow onto the passenger floor, so it would be one thing after another and I had no time, money and place to fix it. Thanks for following up on it.
