My older brother still has his '55 Rapide (SKD 483) and he fabricated a fully enclosed rear chain guard with lubrication system to keep out all the road dirt and grime etc... from killing the chain. I know some purists in the 'keep it standard' brigade will sneer at such a mod. but he has had the same chain for several years now...

Hehe, I'm beginning to build up quite a collection of parts that fall into that category Larry! ;)
@453421abcdefg123454 жыл бұрын
That was a nice job with all new parts ! There is the problem, someone has used full thread bolts, the bolts are threaded where they pass through the flange, and if you measure a threaded part(as you did) it is smaller that the bolt size, which has given excess clearance and bad bearing , the sprocket bolt nuts should be held with a spanner, as you did correctly, if they are turned they "jack" the unit off the hub and can/will cause cracking, over the years various "bubbas" have attempted to repair these bikes without having any engineering knowledge, probably cursing the design when it all goes pear shape and flings them up the road! Stay safe ! Chris B.

@@TheMightyGarage wow thanks for sharing a link to the video, truly a Triumph heaven, Beautiful looking Thunderbird too, mine would have been the same polychromatic blue originally, there are still a few tiny spots on the frame where it has chips of the original color. Not a big fan of that color though. Mine is a older restoration with paint that has aged nicely, painted black so you could call it a Blackbird. while mentioning the color, I think the Norton manxman polychromatic blue is a bit darker than the thunderbird .

Just thought of a couple of uses for the old drum. You could mount a clock movement in the centre hole perhaps? Or, mount it as a dinner gong. ( Do people still have these?). Sorry this lock down is getting to me🤪. Seriously though, I’m actually enjoying being home, I’m getting so much done, except my bike now has a puncture from pushing it out the shed about 6 feet! No sharps in the tyre, the tube just blew😡. Anyway stay safe and best wishes.

An idea came to my mind when I saw how loose the bolted connection was, once all the original bolts were dropped in their holes. And I’m still juggling with. So here it is. I’m thinking about the capacity of liquid gasket to fill voids. That’s the kind of product that can be selected for its physical capability to sustain relatively high pressure. And, I know that it is quite common among them to be relatively elastic and that are made of material that expand a little while curing. As a bonus, if this does the job as an efficient connecting device, the damping effect of the connection could bring a smoother ride and reduce shock loads received by the secondary transmission components and therefore increase their reliability. This is just an idea 💡of mine. I have to admit that it does require a second and a third thought. 🤔🤔 But, I have to confess => That’s the kind of idea I usually implement on my own equipments. 🤫 Anyhow, your solution, Mike, is indeed a great one. It is brilliant and very well implemented. Bravo 👍 👍 !!

Thanks Jean-François. Keep those ideas coming 😉. I hope all is well. Yes, that job turned into more of an investigation than I expected but I feel a lot more confident about what happened now and hopefully the fix will last a lot longer. Best wishes, Mike

less teeth on the rear would mean slower acceleration (harder for the motor) but more top end speed, if I understand it right?, thinking about the gears on my bicycle.
