Everything about this number is terrific and they all look like they’re having a blast even though it was obviously choreographed down to the last millimetre. That dress! Helped not least by Mitzi’s incredibly in-shape lithe body. It’s so daring and yet so tasteful and actually quite conservative. She really works the dress under the lighting. The boys are so smart and add so much without drawing attention from the star. Great song and arrangement too.

Mackie’s first nude illusion gown. Mitzi said Gene Kelly advised her to NOT do a weekly variety show, to just do event television. Very Wise. Boy, do I miss all the variety shows and specials. So much music, featuring every great entertainer of the time. So glad so many of those wonderful moments are preserved here.

The way the stage becomes completely dark, against the flashes of white and silver... and the dress, seemingly totally bedazzled but the suggestion of nakedness under a dazzling silver, wow.

@63bplumb Well, now that you've had time to catch your breath, I suggest you look up Pink's performance of "Glitter in the Air" at the Grammys, or maybe Beyonce's Super Bowl halftime show, and then let me know what you think about those performances.

Oh, my GAWD. That dress has never been surpassed. Who could have guessed the Stonewall riots happened the year of this special? But correlation does not equal causation.

I always suspected Stonewall was the result of Judy Garland's death AND Mitzi Gaynor's nude gown. The combination of fabulousness and tragedy. Fabgedy.

I’m stunned. I’m not sure what to make of this. It’s so slick. Maybe too slick. Is that even possible? There is clearly talent and artistry in every nook and cranny of this musical number, but it seems to “jump the shark” with its overindulgence. This Mitzi clip seems to be almost a parody of itself. Perhaps I’ve seen SCTV’s Lola Heatherton dance with the Juul Haalmeyer Dancers too often.
Am so glad this number left a powerful impression Rob. Truth be told, it was nothing less than ground-breaking back in 1969. This style of eye-popping, 'almost see-through' gown Mitzi wore thanks to the genius of Bob Mackie no doubt essentially HYPNOTIZED millions of people from Coast to Coast when it first aired. Mitzi herself praises this gown, (and the number itself) as one of her absolute favorites, and it's easy to see why. We'd also be remiss if we didn't acknowledge the profound, soul-stirring impact the song itself and the lyrics no doubt had on MILLIONS of citizens (not just in the U.S.) psychologically plagued with distress and rage at our American Government perpetuating this 'unwinnable war' overseas. Rest assured, while the Vietnam War ignited MASS rage across the Globe, no citizenry was more shell-shocked and horrified at this unadulterated genocide than millions of American citizens. Mitzi Gaynor's TV show was a welcome respite amidst a sea of chaos, and this entire 'nude gown' anomaly was only icing on a much needed cake! Here's a page from Mitzi's FB page, where she gives a bit more context on the number, and her love for the inimitable Bob Mackie. facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10156709332326127&id=55092721126&set=a.10150540330966127

@@MichaelSteverMLS Thanks for helping to put it into context. It certainly is a stunning performance! I didn’t see the date in the title of the clip, but knowing that this was the late sixties, makes it even more groundbreaking. I thought the clip was in the hay day of the seventies and that it was riding on the coat tails of musical variety shows like Sonny & Cher and The Carol Burnet Show, but clearly it is the other way round! Bob Mackie’s dress foreshadows the amazing work he did on those later variety shows. So, hats off to a groundbreaking performance. I so glad you posted it! Xoxo
