We can’t use exceptions to the rule as the norm. Very rare to find a dark skin biracial. The darkest you usually get is YAra Shahidi. And she still pretty light I’m specifically talking about black and white biracial children. Because of course an Indian and a black person will make a darker skin child(from the norm). With my mom being mixed raised in the 80’s she felt like she didn’t fit in with anyone. Looking at it as a non mixed person, you can be quick to dismissed their experience. Lots of people feel the way that she does in the show. There are also lots of factors that Mae their scenario specific to them.

@@nylamichelle3268 what about the experiences of the mixed children who came before them? It's not like it just started happening in the 60's, 70's or 80's. @Natasha-et5wo5 жыл бұрын
Queen Quantricia as a mixed I can confirm we do have issues. In fact you could say our issues as just as big as other races issues, but there’s a misrepresentation of us in the media and people have this automatic stereotype. As a mixed person, ive been told I should be DARKER if I wanted to fit in. As a mixed person, I’ve been told if I was a little LIGHTER I would “look better”. As a mixed person, there’s always a battle of which one to identity as, it’s always black or white. When it’s none, I identify as both(mixed) but the media and other people are so fixed on calling us black. Why should I only fixate on one side when my white side is just as valuable and has much history as the other. It’s like at school, there’s always decisions to be made of which friend group to hang around with, genuinely people make us choose and how we choose people automatically assume that we don’t like a side to us or we’re a particular way. This is some of my experiences, thank you for reading.

This is a huge problem, especially for BLACK WOMEN. It's not fair that bi-racial people get to have their OWN representation while ALSO being able to represent black people. Like the Kanye modeling auditions. He asked for only mixed people to come in, excluding blacks. Yet, they're also playing full black roles in almost every TV series and movies. Even in most of these black family shows, at least 1 of the daughters and the wife are always light and biracial. I'd get it if Black-ish was predominantly black, but it's not. I think this show is deff necessary. My mother is mixed race women and she told me plenty of moments in her life were growing up being mixed was not a "beauty standard" in the 70's-80's and you were considered a freak for not fitting into either side of black or white people. Among her childhood, she struggled with identity issues early on from deciding which color dolls to play with, to which color men she should date, not just what's shown on "Mixed-ish" of the teasing. She was threatened to have her hair cut off multiple times by other darker skinned girls and ran out of clothing stores. My grandfather, who is a white man, was attacked in our hometown for being married to a black woman and my grandmother, a black woman, was shunned in her own community. Even I questioned what exactly my mother's race was. As a child when I would color her in family pictures, my mother, being a lighter skinned woman was always left white on the paper and the rest of my family colored brown for their skin as my father and brother are black. I do believe the show could touch on a lot more of colorism especially during that time period and not depict that you had to be in a cult in order to date outside your race, but there was plenty of social repercussions.

Troyce you are the real mvp as a “mixed” person (person who can be labeled as bi-racial or mixed) this entire show is a whole ass mess so is the blackish series 🤦♀️ I like the depiction of how us blacks can have a good sense of humor and familial ties, but the show doesn’t represent blacks universally nor will mixedish represent “mixed” people universally that’s just plain common sense because mixed can be black and asian, black and hispanic, hispanic and asian, etc. any child born of differing ethnicities yet there is a perpetuation of this narrative that comforts whites and allows them to deny these people who are black and white the proper opportunity to decide which side they identify more with, but it also goes the same way with certain blacks who has the residual remnants of the whiteness they condemn and that’s okay, but in order for the black community to be truly united you must recognize how widely and beautifully blackness transcends into different cultures, tones, continents, and intermingles with ethnicity which should be acceptable as long as the person who is mixed with black identifies with their blackness in good will not for profit *cough cough* (Cardi) nor to sellout a race that has long been tormented (Steve Harvey, Tiffinay Haddish, Tyler Perry).
@SensationalFinds5 жыл бұрын
Being mixed race is a privilege we are born into but we have struggles that many don't know to exist unless you know someone that's mixed. Each mixed person has the privilege to connect to whatever community they feel most themselves and society can't dictate how they should look at themselves. Identity is becoming a big topic but when I grew up I didn't know a lot of bi-racial kids. I was put up for adoption because my mom is white and my dad black and she was ashamed to bring a black man home to her family. This is a new conversation that multi-racial people should speak on and try to educate on bc it's not clear cut as you look black you are black. Those are the stereotypes that can lead to not feeling good enough or suppressing an entire ethnic background, just to feel accepted

I can say, even as a darker skinned girl I was often labeled as being mixed or non-black because of my hair type, and features. However, both of my parents are dark skin black people. While we have multicultural bloodlines, my immediate family is black and like many other black people, were unable to trace our bloodlines. Therefore, it would be stupid for to walk around saying I'm mixed when I don't even know what. My point is growing up dark skin with racially ambiguous features, fellow black kids weren't sure how to take me. However, by white people I was still treated like an average black girl. They were dismissive and rude but I can admit, I haven't faced as much discrimination as my dark skin racially unambiguous sistas. Honestly, I can understand both sides. *Though mixed or biracial kids have their hardships, its still and won't be on the same level a dark skin racially unambiguous black people. That's a fact. It’s a story from their point of view. OAN: made it to the end! ❤️
@Bornstunna05 жыл бұрын
Jazzy L. point is if someone is mixed tell them to identify as mixed because most of the time they identify as black and they’re being used to replace mono racial black people. anytime there’s a big movie and tv show with a black lead it’s always a biracial girl like zendaya, yara, amandla etc. it’s not fair that they get their own spaces but also take spaces of actual black people
@jazzyl.91585 жыл бұрын
I agree, however, we are talking about this show. And maybe with this show people will identify with who they are fully and may start feeling uncomfortable with taking black roles if they aren’t fully black. 🤷🏾♀️ I don’t know about you, but I haven’t seen many shows or movies that are catered to mixed people🤔 As in this character is mixed. A man made these shows based on his truth. Where as white people cast people based on what they visually see as the acceptable black. The only thing that can fix this is if mixed people stop playing into that hand and not accept the roles of someone like Nina Simone because it’s not based on truth. Even if mixed the skin color should fit.

But the system and society we live in doesn’t let up. That is the “ force” you are actually referring to, and not me. Not sure why you want to see things in rose tinted glasses and not what they are, but it will do you no favours. You are not the first biracial to have been born, and if you read the narratives of those who went before you you would not be so naive. Maybe you millennial biracials are testing the waters with this new biracial movement. But as far as history goes, it’s not going to work and never has because the two particular races represent opposing ideologies. And you sitting in the middle cheering on both or bashing both only aggravates things, which is why the show is receiving backlash now.

Quing Tarzan so no one ever said bircial ppl dont experience racism... the conversation is about colorism which is the systemic disadvantages darkskin ppl face specifically.... it doesnt go both ways. ppl found out what colorism was last week & dont know how it works. biracials literally make more money, get lesser prison sentences, lesser suspensions & get married more than darkskins. being biracial is a privilege & thats how colorism works, there is no systemic edge darkskins have over biracials. & the is when ppl talk about colorism, on one hand ppl are saying "it's another way to divide black ppl" so why do they need a show like mixed-ish if we're all black. by your logic, wouldnt that make mixed-ish divisive? so they can have a show that seperates themselves from black ppl & still not be considered divisiveness. they get to be in black ish & mixed-ish? but can darkskin ppl portray mixed ppl?

Keep in mind that interracial marriage was legalized in 1967 and if mixed-ish was taken place in the 80s, that was around 20 years after interracial marriage was legalized so the concept of being mixed or biracial was very different.

I live in Oklahoma, I know plenty 😂 they let people put the label “Black “ on them and they run with it🙄 I’m like tell people “ No, I am mixed.”
@toshla48715 жыл бұрын
Straight2dapoint That’s the problem right there. They let people put labels on them. Too many people still perpetuate that “one drop”mindset. Unfortunately a lot of black people still co-sign that shit. People are always ready to claim someone’s black once they accomplish something, ex. Obama, but throw them away if they’re not up to par, so to speak. I’ve only heard a few mixed people actually claim to be black and it was due to that mindset I mentioned earlier. They grew up with a majority black people and black people called them light skinned black/high yella (yellow). So they saw themselves as black. You’re right though. People need to call themselves what they really are and not feel ashamed even if others are bashing you for it

Exactly. They seem to always want to say they're Black. When you point out they're not simply Black, they're mixed, they get offended. 🙄

Many of us do, we have a whole mixed/Biracial community online with our own Facebook groups and blogs.
@breonawarren15075 жыл бұрын
I look at it like this- Nobody is going to be pleased. If you consider mixed people black- there are people who point out that they aren’t black. If they identify as mixed then they are told if you have a drop of black in you, then you are black. Each racial group faces a problem that gets down played by others. Mixed problems get over looked because the black community don’t see their struggles as valid. Interracial marriage literally happened not too long ago, mixed kids still face problems of “your too light to be mixed” or “you are basically white”. Everyone’s problems are valid and should be acknowledged like others.

I find the topic of mixed race people in America very interesting. In South Africa we have coloureds/mixed race and we have our own culture and have a separated culture from the black community. For example Trevor Noah, for us he is considered coloured because of his parents because we hardly use the term mixed-raced. Which is why most times we don't have a thing where we claim people because all mixed race are considered coloured cause that's what we are
@jessica999985 жыл бұрын
erin samuels this should be adapted. Where I’m from we don’t class mixed people as black they have their own circle and we all exist mutually

@@jessica99998 oh okay. I didn't say we class mixed-race and black as the same community.

When he made the weirdo comment, I think he just meant they behaved strangely (obviously), but the way Rainbow (?) explained it, she connected it to her being mixed.

My father is Jamaican and of African Indian decent while my mother is of Chinese, African and Syrian decent. Everyone of my siblings except my older brother and sister have brown skin while theirs are darker, but we consider ourselves mixed I won't suppress one side saying I'm black because I grew up with both sides cultural practises, lessons, clothing , holiday and etc... I understand some mixed people will cater to one side especially if they look a certain way or grew up in whatever side household, however, in the media I've noticed black people are slowly being erased as they are being represented by racially ambiguous or biracial men and women. But it's worse for the women because while they men become darker, they are making the women lighter. Not every black woman's hair is 3a, 3c or even 4A, neither does every black woman have freckles or light - pale skin and natural highlights in their hair. Just because you look black(Mexican American for example) doesn't mean you fit into the black community, it doesn't work that way🤷🏽♀️. And let's not forget these mixed/biracial women like (Cardi for example and Doja Cat) claim their black side inorder to avoid or squash backlash, but in time you will see their colorist and racist behavior shine through(but I think because cardi has a baby who's actually afro latina her behavior is changing.) Zendaya, Dwayne Johnson, Jesse Williams, Yara Shahidi, and other people of mixed or are biracial that identify as black CANNOT represent monoracial black people, especially if the character was a real person. In the Netflix original movie 'The Harder They Fall' colorism shines ONCE AGAIN when the director chose Zazie Beetz to play a dark-skinned plus size Old West legend Mary Fields and Idris Albas character( Rufus Buck) was a origin half-Black half-Creek Indian man. The actors that accepted these roles are no better than the people that are straught colorists. Zenday was offered the role of Princess Tiana and she turned it down because she understood that not only was Tiana a DARKSKINNE, BLACK woman, but she was racially unambiguous Why do they always make MIXED people play black people but not white people? Especially the ones that look like Mariah Carey

Not sure why this is controversial? I thought that black-ish was loosely based on Kenya Barris ‘s real life? So, wouldn’t mixed-ish be based on his actual wife’s real life experiences? The show is called blackish because the star is the guy and he’s black ... Kenya Barris, the writer’s wife is mixed.

I’m African American and Salvadorian... growing up was really hard. I was severely outcasted by the Latin community for not knowing Spanish and being half Black. I was then out casted by the Black community cause I wasn’t dark enough and was called Mexican. In the area I grew up in mostly all the African Americans called any Hispanic person Mexican. It just really bothered me and used it as insults. Also, it is very known that both communities can be very racist towards each other. I just never knew why and I hated it so much. It just sucked a lot. Lastly, I never liked how certain people would give me passes or think I’m all that cause I have a lighter skin tone. I think all skin types are beautiful.

I’m mixed and growing up I always looked up to Raven Symone (That’s So Raven). Around both sides of my family I always felt that I was never black enough or Hispanic enough to fit in with them. I was called an Oreo growing up.
