Oh my! Jane! I just now found you and I'm so happy I did! You are such an inspiration. Now I know what to do with all my empty notebooks! Haha! Watching you and listening to you is so inspiring and liberating! I can't wait to see more of your videos! Thank you so much!!! 🤩

I love the reminder to lay down pages and continually add to them. And to use the sketch book to experiment and not have it need to lead to something else. And the blind self portrait! What fun!

For me, even getting started on the creative journey is daunting. I see that working on sketchbooks as you do is a great way to begin! Thanks for sharing your process!

Absolutely! Sometime "real" paper or a sketchbook is intimidating. Using scratch paper takes away that barrier.

Thank you for your video and advice. Experimentation is so important in all art forms, like a crucible for the birth of new forms, a process of proper creation...a "letting go" of expectations ❤.

I agree. Probably every art form has its version of a sketchbook.

I really like your idea of using color and marks, layering as you go and paging through adding things spontaneously.
@jdaviesVT5 ай бұрын
It is interesting to go back through a sketchbook, or previous explorations, and find what I can do with them NOW. It frees me to make marks without having to 'finish' anything. Just see what different marks have to say to each other, and leave it open ended. Come back a few weeks later (or longer) and I might let a new mark join in the conversation. Very exploratory, and I think it keeps my creativity limber. I think, anyway.

Thanks! I sometimes want to focus on a particular THING. Like the people sketches. Figures or faces. And I think: what if I did 100 Faces, or 100 Figures? I'd love to do this in a group. Can't seem to muster the focus to do it on my own.

YES YES YES!! And if a sketchbook is hard to start, use copy paper. Or something in your recycle bin.

Again, you have inspired me to experiment. I know I don’t need permission to let go, but my habit of achieving something believable and understandable to others, even in MY sketchbook, drives me right back to representational and acceptance. I want so much from art for me, not for anyone else. I have several sketchbooks that are not full so now I will move through them in this new direction. I can have other sketchbooks with representational creations, which I use to improve my skills and to see my progress. It’s slow, but rewarding. However, I love the notion of freedom, too, so maybe this is how I should begin my art practice to loosen up. 😊
@jdaviesVT5 ай бұрын
That's great that you have a sketchbook practice focused on specific skill-building! Drawing from what you see IS a valuable skill - it makes you more attuned to seeing things in your environment. You can also practice SEEING what you can do with materials. What kinds of lines, marks, patterns, smudges, can you make? What kind of expressive qualities are possible? It's not an either/or proposition. Do both! I'm guessing that practicing mark making with materials will significantly enhance your drawing-from-sight skills. And possibly vice versa.
@135talmont5 ай бұрын
@@jdaviesVT Thanks for the feedback. Honestly, it is meaningful. I already pulled out some Inktense blocks that have been sitting in my supply cabinet for some years. I was discouraged by them when I first bought them, but this morning I water washed some watercolor paper and then dove in with random marks and found it quite satisfying. I’m excited for the possibilities. 💖

@@jdaviesVT ❤ I ordered a cheap mixed media notebook from amazon just after watching this video so that I can start something like this!! No, I feel inspired, I just tend to use small journals, but I think that's a constriction. Larger format will allow me to scribble better.

I will try to do that one online sometime. Maybe 2025. It's good content for artists of any experience level - it is a course that offers learning on many levels. Maybe I should call that "Layers of Learning". Anyhow, when I find a way to teach on multiple levels, it's really fun, and rewarding for me.

I ❤ this so much….this is what I want my art practice to be like….loose, experimental and free! Do you choose a selection of paints and mark making tools and pull them out before you start…or just go grab them as you go? Also, what is the sketchbook you are using…it looks like it can take a good bit of media.
@jdaviesVT5 ай бұрын
That's great! I don't necessarily select my tools, I just put my box of crayons on the table, my box of paint markers, bucket of colored pencils, miscellaneous charcoal, graphite, ArtGraf chunks, paint, ink, etc.... My favorite sketchbook is this one: www.peterpauper.com/collections/sketchbooks-and-drawing-pads/products/studio-series-mixed-media-pad It only comes in one size, 8"x10".

You have to do this to progress as an artist.
@jdaviesVT5 ай бұрын
Well, I have to do this to progress as an artist, or even to tread water as an artist. It doesn't have to be in a sketchbook, but taking time to play, fool around with materials, focus on process, experiment without trying to 'make something', these are essential. And in my teaching experience it seems that this letting go and letting yourself play is one of the hardest things to do.
@karlabritfeld71045 ай бұрын
@@jdaviesVT yes, I learned that from you years ago and I still practice every day, usually on scrap paper. It's been so freeing and my art has gotten so much better. Thank you.
What’s this particular sketchbooks size and paperweight etc? Have a link? Thanks
@jdaviesVT5 ай бұрын
Sure. I use this one: www.dickblick.com/products/bienfang-mixed-media-pad/ in 9"x12" and 11"x14", and this one www.peterpauper.com/collections/sketchbooks-and-drawing-pads/products/studio-series-mixed-media-pad which is 8"x10', and has each page perforated so that you can remove them individually, just in the event of an accidental masterpiece.
