The lyrics make so much sense! Peanuts are legumes (aka beans) just as their name suggests they're a type of pea. That shell is actually their pod and that also explains why there's usually two or more in a pod. So them being nuts is just because we humans were like, "hey these are hard and crunchy and have a similar taste to these other hard fruit pods that grow on trees."
