Quaternium 15, which releases formaldehyde. - Mercury, which can damage the kidneys and nervous system. - Dibutyl and diethylhexyl phthalates, which disrupt hormones and damage the reproductive system. - Isobutyl and isopropyl parabens, which disrupt hormones and harm the reproductive system. - The long-chain per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances known as PFAS, which have been linked to cancer. - M- and o-phenylenediamine, used in hair dyes, which irritate and sensitize the skin, damage DNA and can cause cancer. The thing with fragrance in skincare is that it’s not really necessary. And for those of us who actually are sensitive to it; not being able to buy certain products because of this unnecessary ingredient is sometimes… quite frustrating 🥲 It does absolutely nothing for the skin, so I sometimes wish fragrance was left for bodycare-products. Fragrance has no benefit to the skin and the risks are probably greater than the reward especially since it's not really regulated. It's totally possible to have "cosmetically elegant" products without fragrance or allergens, even if it might be more difficult to formulate. Most people looking for the educational skincare videos probably have issues they are looking to solve which might be exacerbated by fragrance, so I don't think it's bad to say it's best to avoid it. Interesting info in this video otherwise, and it's so true that skincare is personal.

I just want brands to be transparent and stop being misleading and just because fragrance isn’t deadly doesn’t mean we all want it or can use it and saying a product is fragrance free but actually isn’t is not cool in my opinion.

Sounds like my issues last year - the Mario badescu cleanser wasn’t my friend and neither was the retinol. You said the salicyclic acids were dying out your skin - but what strengths are you using the acids and are you using any moisturisers? For me my adult acne at 39 - finally stopped (and scars disappearing) when I stopped any ‘blemish clearing’ type products and went basic for a while before adding back in the aha & bha. In the evenings I use either the lowest strength Paula’s choice bha lotion or the ‘resist’ aha lotion (on different days) plus use antipodes night cream (at night) . For day, I use the antipodes vitamin c serum (adds a glow) and the antipodes Manuka honey day cream + an spf sunscreen by dermologica. For cleanser I use a dermalogica gel cleanser (basic & gentle one) and every couple of days I use dermologica microexfoliant. I also stopped wearing make up as it made me breakout (my eyes got allergic too). We can’t skip moisturiser even if oily skin as skipping this it makes it produced more oils. Ive recently introduced naturiium serums amd acids including the lactic acid to my regime (and stopped the Paula’s choice) but too soon to comment on these (I think so far so good. Will see).

Hi! Licensed Esthetician here, “medical grade” means nothing, it’s marketing. It’s drilled into our brains in school but they are formulated no different! The “difference” is that who you’re working with (ex: your esthetician) is specifically trained to know the in’s and out’s of THAT line they carry and with the knowledge of skin (which doesn’t come with just having a license) they can better recommend products for you as a client. I’m not trained in cerave nor have background info and education on that line to confidently recommend it to a client (even though ironically I have because sometimes there is a place for it!) Focus on sun protection and learn the correct use of Tretinoin and Hydroquinone (which are widely available in PH btw without prescription).

Really shocked by this list from you it hits everything on the head that I need addressed. I have extremely oily sensitive acneic skin. So often all reviews and rules are fueled by dry or combo skins reviewers who all drill in moisturizing products or demonize all product. That’s the complete opposite of what I need as a true oily skin. Every part of my face is oily and I tried oil cleansing for years believing I could force my oily skin into submission and disappearance by just moisturizing my skin enough but that’s not how it works. Everyone is different every body is different and moisturizer isn’t a requirement for every skin and surfactants aren’t always the worst thing. It’s taken me a long time to figure this out but those rules REALLY apply to me. The only thing I do need is eye cream to prevent wrinkles lol. Great list and very very reasonable call outs.
@Flutterbyby2 жыл бұрын
Agree and from my experience skin can changes over time, or with change in season, diet & your activities (indoor/outdoor exercise, use of sauna etc). Over past 15 years I’ve been switching from super oily with acne, to extremely dry with acne, to oily, then back to dry, now normal/combo (plus always been sensitive). So we need to pay attention to our skin as the needs changes - mindful skincare.
@aftereverett2 жыл бұрын
@@Flutterbyby couldn’t have said it better. When a dermatologist said “why are you moisturizing if you’re oily?” It really shook me because every KZbinr and beauty guru has told me otherwise lol! I want to look young and prevent premature aging is what I told her in a scoffing manner and she kindly and professionally explained skin is an organ and we don’t need to attack it constantly or treat it constantly unless we’re trying to address a issue. So target and treat the specific problem but if there is NO problem don’t treat it. So if you’re truly oily all over, don’t moisturize that day. If you have acne cleansing won’t be enough, treat the acne. I already knew as a hairstylist surfactants are demonized as well. It just never occurred to me to be mindful with my skin and to be more simple and treat simple issues. I think we all so easily get caught up in the glamour and peacefulness of these beauty rituals while at the same time we get insecure about our skin problems and over exaggerate treatment. So instead of spot treating acne we slather our face in treatments. Instead of going to a dermatologist for anti aging treatments or touch ups we slather our faces in product hoping that will be the answer. It is all so excessive and tricky. But you’re entirely right! Have to learn to be mindful, gentle and to stop being so critical and to be realistic. Treat the issues and address the concerns as they come. This is a body that is always growing and changing. We too should grow and change with it. Switch up how we treat it.

The weirdest thing I hear again and again is the whole "mineral sunscreen for sensitive skin"... huh? I have very sensitive skin. (I mean, when I was on the "natural"/"clean" beauty bandwagon, my skin was constantly pissed off at my.) My skin freaks out from so much -- especially physical sunscreens.

@Spiritualsciencehealing2 жыл бұрын
Wdym you can use Niacinamide and Vitamin C, they haven't shown to react with each other or anything like that, you can layer them one over the other with no issues unless there is something else in any of the products which reacts with Niacinamide or Vitamin C. Any article you find that says otherwise is based on outdated research that doesn't translate to a real world scenario.

I think people get food and skincare confused, a lot of formula concerns people have are similar to food. Such as a long ingredient list, it's more processed, or fillers and preservatives are bad. Etc. Your skincare and your food are very different.

People with zero proper medical training/degree in dermatology/any licensed medical training should not be giving out skincare/healthcare advice. Simple as that. You can research all you want but unless you understand the human body/processes, is you trying to interpret things you have no full understanding of. Someone who worked at a counter in department store, has zero dermatology/medical knowledge and training should not be treated as a source of skin knowledge. Someone who is a ‘skincare enthusiast ‘and demonises whichever ingredient is trendy to be demonising is again just a blind leading the blind.

Would you agree that make up and skincare ingredients aren't regulated enough in the US? It's my understanding that a lot of the synthetic ingredients as well as the Parabens do cause cancer and long term illness, are you saying you've seen studies that it doesn't? I'm genuinely curious.

That is a myth and a misconception. Parabens are biodegradable, they are broken down naturally in the environment so they do not cause pollution so no need to avoid or remove them.

Rule that should go away that sunscreen should be your last step NO a primer should be your last step
@wendigo19192 жыл бұрын
Sunsreen is the last step of skincare. Primer is not a part of skincare, it's considered a part of the makeup process. Also, not every uses primer; I certainly don't... my skincare is my priming step. I'm a long-time aesthetician and makeup artist and I don't even use "primers" on myself ever and on clients I only use them occasionally, depending on skin type. A good skincare prep is best for most people.

I think with SPF, it's just about finding one you're happy to wear everyday due to how they feel on your personal skin but I personally only use mineral sunscreens as they are the only "ocean safe" ones and I think being conscious about our impact on the environment is just as important as looking after ourselves

I hate to be the one to say actually but actually, there is no evidence that chemical sunscreens have a large impact in ocean life. There are bigger threats to the oceam and problems (like the climate crisis) than what sunscreen you wear if we really want to help there are better ways. Unfortunately it's not that simple a solution as to stop using a certain product :/

I remember the time when tea tree was hyped for a lot of things. I have always suffered from acne and was recommended to use it. However, acne is just one condition of my skin type, it is also very sensitive and the tea tree products (from the body shop) were way too aggressive. It did not help with my acne and basically damaged my skin.
