flying with a firearm : my experience

I recently had to fly to Portland Oregon for a death in the family and I wanted to bring my conceal carry firearm. I had always wanted to try it but backed out every time due to fears of having issues and possibly missing my flight or having to deal with the gun negatively in some sort of way. I just thought it was too much hassle.
So this time I figured I would give it a try and to my surprise...flying with a firearm in your checked bags is extremely easy and hassle free. At least on Southwest Airlines to from Vegas to Portland was lol.

fyi...I flew back to Vegas from Portland the other day with no issues with my gun. they wiped my gun box down to check for explosives this time...but it was still easy as pie and fast.

I just flew to Las Vegas and was purchasing a car and driving back to Milwaukee alone. I thought it would be a good idea to bring a firearm along, I am a ccw holder and it is honored through all the states except Illinois on my way back home. I flew Southwest Airlines and I went to fleet farm and purchased a $25.00 pistol safe and I put the pistol and magazines in it. I purchased ammo in Las Vegas at Walmart for the trip home. I was nervous being my first time at the airport with a pistol but it turned out to be very easy and the folks at Southwest were very helpful.

I fly with mine every flight. I have the same case and I fit it inside my main suitcase and only pay for 1 checked bag. Just declare you have a firearm at the counter where you check in your bags and fill out the form. Unloaded and in a lockable case and your good.

@@mrlewis1607 Yes you then sign a form that it is unloaded and have to put it in the gun case then put it back in the checked baggage. They will ask you to wait while they run it thru x-ray then they give you the ok and you go on your way. I leave all my mags full but not in gun. Some want ammo in the box you purchased it in. Make sure it is easy to get to in your checked bag when you first need it at the counter or you might have your clothes fall out like mine did. lol At the other end of your trip you pick the bag up at their office by the baggage carousal.

Just came home from Texas and bought a Rem597... it's very easy to travel with a weapon. We flew United. Checked in my hard rifle case with a few boxes of 22 and 9mm. Great info, a lot of people will get some good info from your vid.

It's in your checked luggage. Just pick up your luggage at the carousel like normal.

I used to fly with machineguns. Had government permits to own such weapons. At the airport check in, the counter gal wanted me to open the suitcase. I refused, telling her I have ATF paperwork allowing me to travel with this machine gun as I was going to a MG competition in Kentucky. She was adamant, I told her to call her airline main office in Texas. She refused, they were holding the plane up for me. Finally, she relented ; however, putting a Firearm notice tag on the outside. I boarded he plane. I had to transfer planes at Chicago. I went to security and told them I wanted the firearm tag removed. Per government firearm traveling regulations and United Airline regs,. I, luckily, was able to watch luggage being loaded on the plane I was taking. I saw them loading bags, without my gun bag being loaded! Immediately, I went to security. Finally, they came back and said the bag was on the flight now. No explanation, I feel a baggage handler saw the tag before it was removed and set the case aside. After that, I refused to fly through Chicago with any Class 3 weapons. Really feel I dodged a bullet, almost had my full-auto PPSh-41 stolen.

Dario Ortiz The website said the gun will be counted as one checked bag so I would simply put your gun case in an actually small luggage case since it will be treated as check bags anyway. They make tiny luggage now. I would not feel comfortable waiting for a traditional gun case to come out of on the baggage claim round about. If you miss it or you are late to baggage claim....a thief could snatch it before you spot it. Keep in a luggage I say. But technically , the website did not say you needed it to be in anything other than a hard sided lockable gun case if you are OK with that.

+Dario Ortiz Firearms must be checked luggage, not carry-on. If you do it right, carrying gun protects your luggage from airport employee thieves. Gun must be inside hardside case, locked with NON-TSA lock, declared, and checked. All other checked luggage must use TSA locks, which only prevent Sunday School teachers from getting inside your bag. Some travelers use this "check a gun" procedure to more securely move their stuff inside a more secure method of transport. Non-gun luggage must use TSA locks, or no locks. Guns can use more secure non_TSA locks. They carry an empty flare gun, which is a firearm, and follow procedures for gun in checked luggage.

I Flew from Commiefornia (LAX) Back to Minnesota With a NORMAL (No Thumb safety) Shield, 3 Magazines, & The ammo in a 4$ Mtn Case Guard. I bought a Pelican Case out there, Along with 2 stupidly tight fitting Masterlocks (To lock Both sides!!!) And put the FIELD STRIPPED PISTOL in the Case. It is best to do this because when you are asked to open the case (AND YOU WILL BE) It INSTANTLY Puts them at ease & There is no need to show clear. It is very Dependent on the Airline company as to What you must do. I Flew Sun Country, & It was easy. Exactly as You had to do, sans the Stand around for 10 minutes bit. This was the First time I have ever Flown... If I can do it, Anyone can!
