We had a Sunrader in the 80’s. We had 3 children. All 5 of us and we had a blast. California - Yosemite, Larsen, Yellow Creek and Yellowstone and so much more. Loved it but definitely had to time the mountain grades like an 18 wheeler.

I bought one new in 1985. The 18’ with 2 wheel drive and the automatic trans with overdrive. Thankfully I bought a bumper to bumper warranty from Kelly Blue Book. After multiple transmission failures they insisted the overdrive be locked out. A couple more failures and gave up and traded her in. Too bad, I loved that crazy little thing and if it had a standard transmission I’d still have it.

Anyone looking to buy a rig similar to this one doesn't give two craps that this is a manual trans. And I've driven a 22r powered rig with an auto. It was slower than molasses in the middle of december. The autos that come with these engines take a lot of power away from them.

That's actually a great deal at $39,000. I know people who dont think so, but capable rigs that will last a life time are very pricey. This is completely upgraded and like new. You would pay about that for a new truck camper, then spend a bunch to upgrade it, then you still need a truck. Four wheel campers, that have everything this has, are well into the 30s.
@bebeslife45192 жыл бұрын
My dad had a 1988 Toyota regularcab pickup 2wd with the 22r and 5 speed he bought around 1990.. He lifted it up and added large mudtires. He grew tired of no A/C and traded it for a Honda Civic in 1999. He said he was able to haul my uncles boat that must have been around 2500 lbs and he sometimes forgot it was there and drove too fast a few times. He then bought a 2002 f150 FX4 Supercrew which he thinks is a better truck in every single way. But I think that there's always more room for a small pickup truck.

@janeprescott9803 жыл бұрын
I know of one for sale, but you would need to do all the upgrades yourself. Lotto work, but wow when done your so self sufficient!!! I'd start with bigger tires frame lift, springs chassis and go up
@pouglwaw5932 Жыл бұрын
An EMP pulse could possibly destroy the circuitry in the alternator. You'd keep driving, but your battery wouldn't be getting recharged.

I have a 1985 toyota 4runner with the 22re and 5.29's in the axles exocaged with DOM and she does 75 up the cajon pass in 5th gear without downshifting running 35x12.50R15 BFG's on the way to Vegas! Its all about gearing with small engines. She probably did about 70 MPH in 5th with 4.88 gears no problem. How fast do you need a 18' camper to go??
@rogerwhiting93103 жыл бұрын
@@tgreen1380 at what rpm is the engine running? That kind of gear ratio is usually redlined at 75 mph.
@tgreen13803 жыл бұрын
@@rogerwhiting9310 not with 35x12.50xr15" tires the rpms are no where near that high at 80 mph which is about as fast as you wanna go in a 1985 4runner with solid axles front and rear and front disk but rear drum breaks !!
@SheWasADemon2 ай бұрын
Ours Is a 4 speed, slightly different and not called the sunrader. It was a slightly different collab between toyota and another company. Contemplating restomoding it eventually
@minimutt14083 жыл бұрын
Anyone considering getting an old Toyota motorhome needs to research the recall that happened on the rear axles. They were recalled because they weren't strong enough for the load and they would break. If you see a rear axle with 5 lug nuts run away. I still see people selling these on Craigslist and they are an accident waiting to happen.

Compared to what people are spending on Sprinters, etc., 39K was not a bad price really... This would be cheaper to maintain, and more capable. Alternatively, one may be able to get a nice big foot or northern lite and stick on a used F250... that might run 39k as well?

I had 4.88s in my 86 Toyota. I had 33s on it,a metal flat bed, ladder racks, metal side boxes, and about 1000pounds of construction equipment on it. I ran my framing company out off that truck for many years in the 90s. Wasn't fast, but got up the hills and was great. Trucks wernt that fast back then. I miss that truck. Gave it to a employee of mine with 340,000 on the odometer. He drove it for a few years and sold it.

Nice rig no doubt about it, but for $40 k you can get a brand new van and something left over to convert it into an equally able camper, sans 4x4 which is not really necessary
@kimhorton61093 жыл бұрын
New van? Maybe in 1990. These days that New Ban would be more like $90. A used decent camper would be more like. $80

Only 20 were made by the factory So yeah ... $40,000 and rising Go price a new vehicle today ... 2021 dodge pro master 3500 is $37,895 I priced out all of the components to build a van and it’s around $30,000 with a decent solar system add in labor and that’s why rigs are over $100,000 now $40,000 for a classic 4x4 sunrader
