Tom, this is amazing stuff. To hear it straight from the boss, that too for free on KZbin... that's a chance that many don't give. Your tutorials and your Studio Time videos are just packed with so much advice and many tips and tricks that a common could employ to mimic the music that the great legends create. I'm really glad that you're making these videos. Cheers and keep up the good work. By the way, I love the Batman V Superman soundtrack... love you Junkie

Hey! So what happened there with the compressor? There's a compressionratio of 4 and a little overdrive (warmth) I think? And then somehow this brings out more of the transients...?
@madincraft58099 жыл бұрын
Vincent Groos He was using the UAD Fatso in the Jr. mode which has a fixed compression ratio... I believe that the ratio changes dependant on the input level much like an LA-2A style comp does. That particular "compressor" was actually designed to emulate the sound of a tape machine so it lacks a lot of the options that say, an API 2500 has. What the Fatso (hard and software) excels at is the personality it imparts to the material; it does this by combining compression, saturation (warmth), and transformers into a big, fat, "woomph-y" sound. You essentially just dial in your signal and enjoy!
@madincraft58099 жыл бұрын
Madincraft Also, the transient punch that you speak of, IMHO, is more due to the fact that he is playing probably 40 separate drum samples all with varying degrees of micro-timing differences... thus giving it a flam-y type sound... when this hits the Fatso, being a signal-dependant compressor, it essentially gets "fooled' into allowing the transients passed its compressor architecture before it bites down into the body of the sound.

Thanks Tom! Just the tutorial I was looking for while getting frustrated mixing some big drums... Are there any sample libraries you would recommend for getting the kinds of drums you sampled yourself?
