MKL is one of the best in the biz. If you haven’t been to a Colony House show. Do it.

Love the bit about how tuning matters!
@johnmcvicker67282 ай бұрын
Number of fingers away on bottom matters. a couple inches can really affect the tight interaction. So input delay by some number of samples can help tie them really well if you're not perfect on placement.

I'd like to know if MKL ever used Waves Submarine on kick (or bass).
@michaellewis62102 ай бұрын
@@johnmcvicker6728I’ve tried it before. It works well in some situations! More of an RBASS guy though

Yeah I think for obvious reasons using sample delay on kick in/out will deliver you better phase coherence than just flipping the polarity, you can also shape the tone with the amount of delay. Sometimes both polarity settings are not great like you might be 90 degrees out of phase and you flip it to be -90 degrees out

Yes, all eq alters the phase (especially hpf). But your snare mics are not 180 degrees out of phase. You can reverse polarity again (on a plugin at least) after eq also, and often can get an even better phase coherence by using the eq phase shift to your advantage earlier in the chain.
@michaellewis62102 ай бұрын
Good thoughts! I think a lot of inexperienced engineers don’t realize that phase shift is happening with EQ and that’s more of the point. Wish I would have mentioned checking phase AFTER you dial in an EQ if you need to do them differently. I’ve definitely been leaning a bit back into making the individual sources sound right, and then doing heavier lifting at the group level
@J_Walker2 ай бұрын
@@michaellewis6210 Yeah, certainly nothing wrong with any of it. I still do a lot of "top down" mixing also, just thought it was worth mentioning the idea. Your mix sounds great. In fact, that live drum mix on "Vol 1" (especially 2: 20) is ❤🔥if you did that too.

Grate job there! Besides to check the phase on OH mics, did you thought just to delay the SnT and SnB by the distance from the snare head to the OH mic? ...just to ensur an alignement between these two mics (well four... but let's down to only two). I did it and just by aligning then I could tell that I obtained kind of coherent sound since I am using the OH more as a drum kit nut only for cymbals... What is your thought on this topic? Not so pure in this issue but worth giving a try someday. Also, not applying on church with drums in a booth, but for some small gigs I tent to delay the whole PA with the distance from snare to line of PA just to gain a coherent sound of snare when listening from the front of stage when a lot of bleed is coming already from the stage.
@michaellewis62102 ай бұрын
Being in phase and in time are two different things. I definitely think it’s worth doing a bit of both though - I love just pulling up the multitracks and working everything back to the overheads. Helps keep the transient very punchy

there's nothing ungodly by calling it a crouch mic hahah. Great stuff man!! good techniques.

I just don’t hate snares if it’s a genre where they’re gonna use any ghost notes, I want those to come up in the snare mic

I'm from Brazil and I would like to ask: can the master main output of the table work below 0 dB or is this not a rule?
@johniebeatsАй бұрын
Advisable to leave it at unit zero then control from your matrix buses at least as a Midas 32 user that’s what I can share but let’s wait here from the gurus cos sometime their processing is different as they use advanced processing units feed their PA Cos as you know you can process outs from the board or processing gears like dbx ,galaxy or Allen and heath
@IWannaGoMissing27 күн бұрын
It’s immaterial whether you use matrix outs or the mains fader to control the whole mix level, assuming your subs are fed by the mains fader and will move with that. A good thing to shoot for is your input faders sitting around 0 because that’s where you have the most resolution. Otherwise as long as you aren’t clipping any later processing it genuinely shouldn’t matter where your mains or matrix faders are sitting
@diogoamaral139725 күн бұрын
@@johniebeats I like to work with the input faders close to 0 and the output faders too, but sometimes the sound gets too loud in the room, so I lower the master fader and it improves a little. I wanted to know if that's the case
