Mixing concrete by hand in a wheelbarrow the easy way

I thought I would make a short video on a fairly easy way to mix concrete by hand in a wheelbarrow. Sometimes if you only need a small amount of concrete and you don’t have the use of a concrete mixer mixing it in a wheelbarrow can be the best option.
I have seen many people spending ages mixing up the sand/chippings and cement together then adding water and spending yet more time that this may be of interest.
I first of all put half of the sand and gravel in the front half of the wheelbarrow, then half the cement followed by the other half of the sand and gravel and the rest of the cement.
The key to this is to make sure it is all in the front of the wheelbarrow.
Pour in about half a bucket of water and work the sand, gravel and cement back into it making sure you get down to the bottom of the wheelbarrow. move the mixed concrete to the front add the rest of the water and repeat the process.
Then it is just a question of working it over for a couple of minutes making sure there is no unmixed material at the bottom.
How to Mix Concrete by Hand. How to Mix Concrete.

My dad and I did exactly this when I was a kid. We poured a walkway around one side of our house and then another with steps coming off the porch. This works people, I can still see the work my dad and I did 30 years ago on Google maps of our old house.

So he's making it from scratch, as it were, as opposed to just mixing quikrete with water? Not sure how that's easier. The way my dad taught me, we use a pulaski, which is an axe-type tool with one blade horizontal which helps it cut through the concrete and mix it really well.

I work for a basement company. I mix pallets at a time all by hand. Lemme tell you that their is a huge difference between aggregated cement and just add water quikrete. This is simple because the rock helps break the sand up. All sand cement is a pain in the ass and I promise their is no easy way to hand mix.

Mixing concrete by hand is bloody hard work. Use buckets to measure the materials for the mix, guess work will result in a poor mix and ultimately a poor finish. Weigh a full bucket of all in. Then reduce the amount in the bucket until you have half the wight in the bucket, then mark the inside of the bucket with a small hole. You can then use this bucket to measure the all in, cement and the water. BTW, your mix is slightly too wet and needs a little bit more cement.

There is nothing easy about working with concrete. There is only very hard and not so hard. From what I remember doing this for a mason is that you had to make sure every pass with the shovel or hoe scraped the bottom of the mixing box or wheelbarrow.

1 kg of cement needs 0.35kg of water to fully effect complete chemical reaction. Masons don't like this ratio as it is very hard to work on. This mix won't flow so formability is very low. So what happens if you put in more water? Positive side is, the mix will be easier to work on. Downside, concrete will lose strength significantly. If water is increased to 0.50kg, concrete will lose about 20% of it's strength. Why is this? Because ultimately the excess water will leave the concrete when it dries up. It will leave behind microcracks where it once was. So be patient and stick to 0.35 to 0.40 or add plasticizer to increase workability.

I've always mixed using a barrow for small jobs. Then I started buying concrete molds to construct a Roman garden and decided to invest in a mixer. Well I used it two or three times then went back to the barrow because I wasn't that impressed. What's more, it made a noise like a WW1 tank with half it's track missing. So I'm back to plugging away with my wheel barrow and loving it...and that method you used is fine...

Nothing disrespectful in pointing out an easier way to mix concrete in a wheelbarrow to the man .What would be disrespectful is not pointing out an easier way to him and letting him struggle on using that shovel .a draw hoe or an American mortar hoe is a far better and easier tool to use to mix concrete or mortar in a wheelbarrow . Having said that if all you have to hand is a shovel his demonstration was excellent .

+gary schraa generally speaking if I'm doing a small job that requires only 2 to 3 barrows of mortar or concrete I leave my mixer at home, it's not worth my while even loading it up. When I'm hand mixing I bring a barrow , shovel, and my hoe .the hoe I have is a very old one that a friend of mine picked up at a flea market in America ,the blade is fairly wide . it has no holes in it.so if I happen to forget to load a shovel (which would not happen are they are always left in the van) I can both put material into and take it out of the barrow and into a bucket with the hoe which I would then use to fill small forms . I would also have bricklaying trowels with me in the event I had to fill small forms . Hope this helps

If as he said you just want a small amount of concrete, why spend £25. Plus why spend the time getting, cleaning then returning a mixer. This way you just clean the barrow.

I've mixed concrete in a wheelbarrow many times but next time I'm going to follow this method. I used to mix it dry before adding the water, which is quite hard work, but I can see the method in this madness, it looks like half the effort. Simples :)

don't use that for anything structural !! Should be batch mixed accurately to ensure consistent strength concrete

To be fair I wouldn't be hand mixing anything structural however I was using small quantities to surround posts which has held up well and no problems at all since making this video 6 years ago. Thanks for watching

can I ask a dumb question: why not just mix half of that amount and then not have to flip the concrete from the back to the front of the wheelbarrow?

Using a HOE to mix is FAR easier than a shovel !
@kbanghart
@kbanghart 5 жыл бұрын
Agreed 💯, my dad and I mixed up tons of concrete back in the day, he taught me to use a Pulaski type of tool which is basically the spade on one side, and pointed and on the other. He was a fireman so that's probably where he got the idea. If the head of the tool is heavy, and the smaller area of the Spade part makes it really easy to go through the mix.
@vixenvg
@vixenvg 5 жыл бұрын
I had to look up pulaski ! But, that does make sense, I do have a couple of hoes, which would prob suit me better than mixing with a shovel... I gotta do edging stones , nothing major !
@kbanghart
@kbanghart 5 жыл бұрын
@@vixenvg yeah, its definitely not a common term for that kind of tool LOL. A hoe would be fine as well, it's just that you want to make sure the tool is heavy enough in the front part so that it'll pull better through the concrete. And remember you don't want the concrete mix too wet. I have to pour some concrete for my backyard, but nothing major fortunately, I'm going to do it in 4×4 sections or maybe 4×3 or something , to make it easier. My dogs have torn up some of my grass, so then when it rains it turns to mud. Yuck
