In the first episode of this season We're looking at basic mixing theory :
What is mixing, and what do we want to achieve with a mix?
This highly visual episode will explain the basic theory of making a simple mix and will help you 'visualize' your mix a lot better. In this first episode we don't really look at what we will be physically performing behind our mixing console, but mainly at the concept of what we will be creating.
From episode 2 on we will be diving into mixing consoles, channelstrips and their functions to understand the signalflow. From there on we will be going into some basic mixing sessions and grow into more advanced types of mixes.

+Terry Doyle Hi Terry, thanks for your comment. As a matter of fact, in the next few weeks I'm actually starting with a new series where we'll go and mix a song from A - to - Z , only with some very basic ingredients. To make that even more interesting to you guys: I'm going to give away the multi-tracks for download. So you can actually use the same material that I'm going to be using in these tutorials! Hopefully the first tutorial in this series should be out in about 2 weeks. cheers!

I join everybody and their comments and send you congratulations. I've been trying to understand this for a long time. I've been told mixing is about "sculpting sounds" and received a lot of different other advice but my mixings still remained like kid's drawings without the cuteness. Your graffics made my brain go ureka. Thank you so much. I wish you all the best from France.

Cool. For the last year, I've been playing my music through a phone with the VLC app out to various speakers, namely 1 speaker portable ones. It's been difficult trying to get a balanced sound through the 10 frequency equalizer. With a song playing, I would dial it in, getting it to sound good. And when the next song plays, not so much. Auuggh! Okay then. So I've been trying to balance it out between all the songs, making sacrifices where I need to. I sought out a video like this to explain because I've noticed that the vocals on each song would come out stronger in different frequencies. Like 1k, 2k, or 4k. I think this was very reason I was struggling to get proper equalization across all songs. I also noticed the quality differencs, and started thinking about the history of recordings and the available frequencies. The one thing that I've been trying to edit out is the echo. 500 was the worst. Probably had a lot to do with the smaller speaker. The strategy then became, "fill the echo' in hopes of canceling it out. I never thought it would be this tough.

I enjoyed this introduction to the process of mixing very much. It was very clear and easy to understand, without 'talking down' to the audience. I am interested in this as I have a KZbin channel in which we tell scary and mystery stories, and I am often interested by how the sound engineer seems to be able to make sounds that "creep around" in the recording. Huw from 'The Black Dog Chronicles'.
