What he did was two drum sets was very interesting, because I would not have known what to do. It's hard enough dealing with just one kit 😂 The automation with the bass gave me some ideas instead of relying on the compressor to even out the tones and notes. I think this is one of the strong points of Pro Tools as you can clip gain see easily and do your crossfades like a ninja.

Yeah, mixing two kits might be hard. There's the video on youtube with Nic Hard mixing Snarky Puppy performance with two kits too.

Thank you very much. Very informative. I’m more into acoustic music than the heavy compressed charts music. So videos like this are more for me. Keep them coming!

Never thought i'd see a free jazz session on this channel?!! I'm a free jazz drummer (among other things) & fortunate to live in Houston, Texas these days which has a vibrant, thriving inclusive, improv scene. I would LOVE to see how he mic'd the drum kits. And I'm curious about the 33609 on the master bus. I'd likely unlink the 2 channels, especially on material like this where there can be tremendous variation in what's going on in each channel. So, Why did you keep the channels linked? What's the thought process / strategy ? thanks! PS - obviously you should include a LOT more free jazz material on your channel LOL
@LYSHEmusic
@LYSHEmusic 8 ай бұрын
Volume of the left and right channels is basically pan. So with unlinked compression elements will flow around a bit depending on what happening in which channel. There's rare cases when it's good on a master. Unlinked compression makes mid image weaker and generates side information. So we should be careful with that. it's kinda wider but weaker. In scenarios like this you can compress each kit on the drum busses individually. But master bus compression is for another purpose - controlling overall level if needed and gluing everything together via dynamic movement driven by whole mix. At least that's how I see that.

Hmmm...I don't think I unlinked L-R on the 33609

@@matthewbrownlie7988 right, I just tried to explain why it’s rarely a good idea to unlink channels on master buss compressor. I was answering to the comment above. By the way I heard CLA says that he always using unlinked compression on the master. And some of the old records on mastering stage for vinyl was compressed this way with Fairchild. So there are definitely some exceptions for this “rule”. I sometimes use it on a parallel compression bus on elements that I don’t need to be strong and stable. It can help to free up some space in the center.

Wow it has been a many moons since I have heard free jazz. I almost forgot about that genre. The horn arrangements/vibes remind me of Wayne Shorter while the dissonance harkens back to Thelonious Monk and Sun Ra. Omg my dad absolutely loved T-Monk as he would often tell us he was the only one who understood him. All we could do is look 😂... Definitely more of this material (non rock/pop) for sure. The organic non chart stuff is more up my alley. Thank you Warren for having me see the light on mixing in Pro Tools. Honestly not only have been sleeping on the power of it, but it makes following mixing tutorials a lot easier since the majority of people use it. I still use Cubase for certain things like midi and composition.

Really nice music ! I’m very involved in the improv new music scene so this is a breath of fresh air for me. Im wondering about time aligning the drums. Is there a trade off with the sense of space/depth of field ? Or is that not an issue because every sound is isolated ? A visual of how everything was mic’ed would be great since it seems like that’s where most of the mixing happened.
@LYSHEmusic
@LYSHEmusic 8 ай бұрын
I think there's big trade off and I personally do it almost never. Aligned recording can sound kinda cleaner but it ruins time and space dependency. Especially with room mics.But Matt knows about opinions like mine, he mentioned it :) so everyone chooses what suits their taste and ears best :)

There is a trade off, and I would avoid being dogmatic...always use your own taste as the final test. At least root out any serious polarity issues.

Time aligning drums really comes down to how bad they are! There's been times the tones are superb and I wouldn't bother at all.
