Mixing monitors from FOH: Pre- or Post-EQ?

Do you mix monitors from FOH in Pre-EQ or Post-EQ mode? Here is my take on the matter, with a solution that can enable you to have the best of both worlds.

Great video!! what do you think is better when mixing at 300-500 capacity club with FOH doing monitors?? I always do PRE EQ, I've had bad experiences with feedback when I did post. I really like the tip on splitting the "money" inputs (example Lead vocals) being split.

@@gainmedialab Hi Ales, I have always carried XLR Y splits to provide dual channels like you discuss here. It is crucial for anything loud enough to be close to feedback. Also pretty helpful for people whose monitor requirements result in a different EQ than what sounds good in the house (acoustic guitars, typically). By the way, actual physical Y-splits can help remind you where you put them in, also ensures separate preamps in all cases. :)

@@rikvee Sure, splits are great. These days I rely more on internal patching in digital consoles, but they can still come in handy sometimes.

I think we should clarify whether or not your stage musicians are on in-ears, wedges, or if both exist together. Our stage is completely void of wedges, and I run our monitor mixes POST EQ and compression. Im typically on drums or guitar, but I set up our console this way as our board is run by all volunteers. 90% of EQ moves for the front of house, only serve to HELP our in-ear mixes, not hurt. This actually gives me a super solid in-ear mix onstage and its glorious. I would likely go about things a bit differently if we still had wedges. You do have to be careful.

My personal experience- Ask them. Serve the performing musicians first and the audience second. If they want eq in their monitors, make it so. If they prefer pre EQ/pre fader in their monitors instead, trust their judgement. In most cases the vocalists tend to prefer post EQ and FX in their monitor while guitar, bass drums, keys prefer pre EQ/pre fader. The musicians are listening carefully to each other for musical cues and if there is too much change happening in the monitor mix the magic is lost. If you must do post EQ monitor sends, minimize all EQ and gain changes once your sound check is complete. Serve the performing musicians first.

Ah,ok, that is true. If possible, duplicate crucial channels and have them EQed differently.
