Mixing Motörhead with Cameron Webb:
I was just a young whipper snapper when I first heard Motörhead! Lemmy wasn’t new to me, he was the Bassplayer in another favourite Band of mine, the Space Rockers, Hawkwind and he was famous for singing their biggest ever single, ‘Silver Machine’. Lemmy was chosen as the lead vocalist for the song because he had the right aggression for a song that soon became the ultimate anthem for bikers the world over. That was Lemmy, a badass take no prisoners Rock Star who’s music defied any classification! In the US the band’s music was famously confused between Punk Rock and Heavy Rock, Record stores didn’t know where to place it. That frankly is what makes Motörhead so great! They are a band without boundaries, the essence of Rock and Roll, The antiestablishment Rock Band of the people!
I bought my first Motörhead single, 'Ace Of Spades' from the Record Box on Fleet High Street. I cycled there straight after School and spent my dinner money on it (no School lunches for me that week!)! It was the heaviest thing I’d ever heard, I went back and bought the Album and became a life long fan!
During the 90’s the band continued to make music, but it was when Cameron Webb took the helm that the band returned to their full glory!
I am so excited to be able to present this course for everyone. This is a huge honour for me. Cameron very graciously takes us through the mixing process, giving us Production notes, instead stories and experiences of what is was like working with Motörhead!

I use Hawkwind's Space Ritual as one of my references. Lemmy drives it but he's playing lead an octave down. It's an object lesson in Everything You Know Is Wrong because it sounds so good, but for all the wrong reasons! He was one of the great bass innovators, especially when you appreciate that he was just trying to be as good as Little Richard.

Thats one of the coolest story i've ever heard. I love that guy lol you do have to play the psychologist to get performances out of them. So he rolled the Bass off boosted the mid & cut the treble… thats brilliant ! If you know where Motorhead is coming from tho you couldn't do that w/a Vox eq & get the same result as Lemmy's 200Watt Marshall w/a 4x15 Cab lol. Brutal player & some more of a song writer outside of Motorhead. Lemmy put Oz back back in the game & got Paid unlike Bob Daisley Lemmy penned a few of those hits on No more Tears.

He was a true poet. He loved writing. Most songs on the records he would go thought 3 re writes and sometimes totally redo songs. He was extremely clever with his words. In a arguement he could talk the best in circles.

Cheers Warren. Going to buy the tutorial and get the tracks - what an interesting offer. Personally, I don't like Cameron's mix: the snare sounds just like every other bloody metal track using SSD4/Trigger, toms fill is lost, the stereo effect on the vocal sounds disconnected from the music, the guitars have no mid range bite/definition, the reverb on the solo doesn't match the rest of the track, the mid range of Lemmy's bass is almost totally missing, and the mastering compression/limiting makes the overall track sound pretty flat.

Thats to bad. Lemmy Loved the mix. Yes there are samples very quietly in there (not slate) but that is the real snare and kick. Mikkey Dee sounds like a machine. Check out the raw tracks and you will see. Vocal was a choice to let this song be different and less stock, more messy. We did what we felt was best at the time

Hi, thanks for the great opportunity to mix a Motörhead song! Wow. I have learned so much from it. Cameron does such a good job in explaining his philosophy behind the process, and the background stories are very entertaining! For a guy like me it is very important to know that its not a bazillion of plug ins that make a great mix. The only thing that would top this series would be the same thing with a NOFX song. Man - Inferno always was and still ist my favorite Motörhead record since the classic alsbums alà Ace of Spades - so to get this insight of how Cameron Webb did produce this record is just amazing. Why did you have to set up a different amp to get the bottom end? Why not just record a DI signal along with Lemmys amp? From what i heard that's what they did live.

Keep the videos coming man, watched your interviews for like 5 hours yesterday...Hey here's a tip for you man.. not sure if you'll ever make it to Baltimore but you said you are a guitar player. Head over to the North American Amp Museum. I'ts like heaven on earth. I meet the guy because I was rebuilding a silver-face super reverb that was complete rubbish, he double checked my work and chowed me a few things but... The man has hundreds of amps,Fender,Marshall, Ampeg,Hi-watt,Orange, all kinds of stuff. Also had an insane mic collection, vintage RCA ribbons,all kinds of goodies. Would be cool to see you inter view him!

How did he hustle the job to produce Motorhead ? a band that by then was close to 25 years old - had a number #1 live album - an all time classic in Ace of Spades - he admits to NOT knowing their records - decides he knows Lemmys sound better than Lemmy - insists on adding his own Bass amp into the mix, DESPITE repeated requests not to. I haven’t enjoyed the production sound of Motorhead in 25 years. I think I know why.

Lemmys tone was what he wanted. He loved the grind of the tubes being pushed to 10. It might not be right for everyone and technically the correct bass tone but I think it was inspiring and powerful
