Many, many thanks for taking the time to produce such a helpful, informative tutorial. I've learned a lot from this! I live in the UK and finding untinted base paint was not as straightforward as I expected. You can't get it in B&Q or Wickes. I had to call around several shops and eventually found a Crowne Paint store nearby that sold untinted house paint. However, I had to buy THREE separate 1-litre tins -- one to be mixed with dark pigments, one to be mixed with medium colour pigments, and one to be mixed with light pigments. Because apparently even the "untinted" house paint had SOME colour in them (that's what they told me!). This is an expensive hobby, but I'm bound and determined to finally -- one day -- create a nice fluid art painting with gorgeous cells and lacing. For once in my life LOL! Thanks again!

This is a great tutorial. Wondering what the ratios would be for a Dutch pour using regular pouring medium instead of floetrol as to not achieve cells. 🤔 if the pouring medium is a little thicker than the floetrol, maybe more water is added
@rainandpours
@rainandpours 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Kristal! What you need to learn is to ditch the ratios and eyeball things. Ratios are a great starting point for a rough idea, but no matter which technique you do, learning to judge consistency by eye and feel is the most important skill to learn. Also thoroughly understanding what each component of your pouring medium actually does is a big part of this too and will help determine whether you actually need it in your pour. In this case you would be absolutely correct in saying that using pouring medium and water would give a different result to using floetrol, however in a Dutch pour you are almost always guaranteed to get some cells because of how fluid the paints are. Generally if you want no cells you make the pm much thicker. Floetrol is designed to reduce the surface tension of house paint and this is the crucial part of why we love it so much for cell creation. It doesn't make the paint thinner so much as it makes the paint less resistant to the forces that bind it all together.

Thank you Mitchell, this video is great. You mentioned in the video that after a while your Aussie floetrol gets old and thinner... and consistency is okay for Dutch pours but not for blooms. Can you explain how you would thicken things up if you have “old” Aussie flo laying around and want to do blooms? Thank you. ☺️
@rainandpours
@rainandpours 3 жыл бұрын
There is no way to thicken it up once it goes thin. It's not like thickening up paints with gel mediums as the floetrol is a single ingredient in itself with a proprietary formula and a limited date for use. Once it has thinned out that's pretty much it and your only alternative to use it would be for use in wall paint or other pouring techniques.

What technique are you using for your pour? And which brand of white paint? Some paints work better than others just in general, and the pouring medium must be clear drying to get the most out of the TLP's.

Hello! Back again! Hoping this isn’t another silly question! I’m trying to work out how much ‘paint’ I could likely create out of 1 container of pigment? I would be using the first example in this video referred to as brushing paint. I know there are 20g in each jar, but are you able to tell me, approximately is good enough, how many teaspoons would be in each piggy jar? Or alternatively if you have ever done it, how much one full jar makes up in paint? Thank you in advance ❤
@rainandpours
@rainandpours Жыл бұрын
That's like asking how long is a piece of string! 🤣 It all depends on how pigmented you want your paint to be. If you want something just for glazing and being quite transparent, you use less pigment. For more opacity you'd use more pigment. I can only say from experience that I can get over 500ml of Sheleeart pouring medium out of 1 jar of pigment
@alanas137
@alanas137 Жыл бұрын
@@rainandpours thank you so much! I thought it would be a bit like a piece of string. 500ml gives me at least a ball park figure when trying to work out costs vs other products. I would love to try some TLP’s just trying to justify the price in my own head. Really appreciate your help 🥳

Thank you so much for such an amazing and easy to understand tutorial! Extra bonus points for being Aussie so I don’t have to try and convert products or find like ones. I am looking at doing a blob painting. If I used your first mixing technique with the gel gloss, should the combination of TLP and gel gloss be suitable to replace acrylic paint? I think that is what I understood from your video but just looking to confirm. Thank you again for an amazing tutorial and you have a new subscriber too 😀
@rainandpours
@rainandpours Жыл бұрын
Glad you found it helpful! Yes you'd be correct, the gel gloss mixed with the TLP will produce a nice thick mixture that you can thin down with tiny amounts of water or a ready made pouring medium until you find the perfect consistency. For blob paintings you want the paint to be really thick, but not so thick you can't push it through the nozzle of the bottle. It's a challenging one to perfect but you can do it! :D

If you are doing the Blooms there is no substitute for the floetrol. Nothing works like the Australian stuff does. You could try US floetrol 10:1 floetrol:paint but it's not the same. The ingredients in that course are recommended for a reason and not just randomly placed there, and have all been tested and approved multiple times. Give the US stuff a go and work on consistencies and making everything perfect until you can get the floetrol :)

So when you mix TLPs for blooms, you just disburse the TLP in Josanja Gloss Varnish and only add untinted paint? Not your normal Pouring Medium?
@rainandpours
@rainandpours 3 жыл бұрын
Yep that's correct :) Because the bloom mic has varnish in it as well, and adding too much gloss can cause it to be too thin and even make the CA behave strangely. So by just mixing in the untinted paint to the pigment it stays a little thicker and is easier to adjust

That's right you don't to thoroughly scrub your canvas as the floetrol doesn't have oil in it. A quick wipe down before resin is recommended though

Very useful explanations and I learn a lot through that video. However, and I am very sorry to say, I really had to force myself watching it. You are who you are and somehow quite unique so I guess it's not about you, it's about me. As a highly sensitive person, there's things that I have a hard time to go along with and your narration was definitely one of them. I think it's the first time I encounter someone that raise its voice tone to mark a period punctuation! And it was quite a pain for my hears. I hope you won't take that too personally and you won't just see here a useless critic. After all, you are an artist but by sharing videos, you are also becoming a content creator and there's always things that can be improved for your audience. It could be lighting, video quality, sound quality editing, etc... and I believe that narration also plays a pro-active role when it's time to appeal (or turn off) your audience and that's why I am sharing my thoughts with you. Anyway, let's wrap this up with positive vibes: the content of this video was extremely interesting and useful so thanks very much for sharing!

Help! I just spent lots of money on Liquitex Professional Pouring Medium (USA) and I find it’s too thin for blooms. Can you suggest a thickener? PLEASE!!!!! I will be forever in your debt if you can tell me what to use to thicken my LPPM. ❤

Hey Michele! That's correct, ready made pouring mediums are not suitable for blooms. You need untinted house paint. I suggest Lisa Marvin Art as she uses the American ingredients though she is in Canada :) A link to her channel is in my descriptions

Hey mate. Just wondering if there is pigments that's not so expensive? But still good for acrylic paint pouring.
@rainandpours
@rainandpours 8 ай бұрын
They definitely are cheaper products our there but the quality is sub par. I've done a few comparisons myself and TLP always comes out on top, and when you do the number crunching they actually work out cheaper per gram compared to most other brands. Because of how they are formulated you also need less to get the colour you need in your work, so they last longer than other brands as well. I understand they aren't within everyone's budget, but that is different to being expensive or overpriced.

How much difference do you think there is. Between pigments , colors and quality. I s there any bad ones that don't work well for pours.
@rainandpours
@rainandpours 3 жыл бұрын
There is a massive difference between some brands and others. TLP only uses high quality pigments and mica, so colour depth, saturation and consistency is always the same. Some brands use lesser quality pigments and mica which can lead to fading, less shimmer, poor mixing into mediums and dull colours over all. I have tested about 10 different brands now and the top three are TLP, Pearlex and Artisue, thought the Artisue pigments work best in resin they can also work well in conjunction with paints.

@@rainandpours I want to get some of the , TLP. And I was kinda of thinking about , Arteza.. I've mainly been using premixed pouring paint. And some of my regular paint. And just thin it out some to pour with. But want to start using mica...

Will this work on all pigments? As well as pigments with Mica powders? Like ColourArte?
@rainandpours
@rainandpours 2 жыл бұрын
It should, however Colourarte is formulated differently to other pigment brands and can cause bleeding or fading when mixed with traditional methods. I am not a fan of them and am part of a large number of people who have never been able to make them work for me as they bleed and fade every time. However, if you are able to make them work with this method then that's a good thing for you :)

Do you know an alternative for the pillow paint for the bloom? An American version?
@rainandpours
@rainandpours 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Niki! There are several suitable pillow paints for the USA, however I'm not sure exactly which ones as the numbers and cans are quite specific. Lisa Marvin, Karen Durishin (Waterfall Acrylics), Jodie Flynn (The Painted Dreamer), Raina the Witch of WTF and Garrick Brown are all American bloomers and mention their products on their channels. Each prefers a different brand so it might be worth checking them out and seeing which looks like it will work best for you :)

Not really if you are making a thick brushing paint as I did in the demo. As I was making it into thinner pouring medium afterwards yes I would have just mixed in the cup. But you would do that process on your artists pallet rather than transferring from one surface to another :)
