It was a true marvel to behold. Thank you for teaching through doing, it's the most effective way I learn, & I learned a lot. I've probably absorbed the equivalent of a bachelor's degree from watching your work/videos. Lastly, thanks for doing justice to such an iconic band & song.

Watching you make decisions and explaining them as you do them is soooo helpful. However, I do get a bit flustered at how much I realize I don't know yet...but we all have to start somewhere, right? Thanks for putting this up. And a RUSH song! Now if you do an old Styx tune, I would be in heaven!

I distinctly remember hearing this song when it came out (I was about 10). It's probably the most influential song / album that drove my interest in music. Was one of the first cassettes I ever bought, and for months I listened to it on my walkman every night when I fell asleep.

One aspect of the snare drum sound on the original that should be noted is that even though there isn’t much room sound in the final mix, that live room at Le Studio is an amazing drum room. In other words, the drum may have been tweaked but the way it responded in that room made it feel like hot had more low end than it did.

@@Producelikeapro You're welcome. I came to this from my own experiments with using samples of my own kit recorded in good rooms. Just replacing the close mic samples from a good room on tracks I recorded in my bedroom made a huge difference without sacrificing a natural sound (it's really the room sounds in samples that make a drum sound, sound unnatural). Oh! Actually, it was one of your drum mixing tutorials that tipped me off to this. You were mixing drums from a big room and you squashed the room mics and when you muted the room on and off it was almost as if the close and room mics were recorded in different rooms, yet together they still maintained a consistent sound. That was the inspiration to try the opposite. Close mics from a big room with overhead/room sounds from a smaller room for a very natural sound that makes it sound like you're recording in better room. Sorry for the essay, lol.

Hi Warren. After watching your video, mixing the rush song tom sawyer I was blown away. I downloaded the tracks for mixing and tried to mix them. I'm relatively new to mixing but I was in my element mixing the song. I thought this was the closest I will ever get to mixing a rock band like rush. So thank you very much for the video and tracks. Also thank Adam for me also. Absolutely brilliant. Keep up the learning info. Cheers Steve from Wigan in Gt Manchester.

Flipping the polarity did wonders for the snare sound. Top/bottom were out of phase. I saw you messing with it in the video, but simply flipping it solved the problem.

very great stream, thank you! i have a technical question... when one is putting out the audio from these, is it possible to pan the individual voice channels? it would be much nicer to listen to two people in a room instead of mono up the middle. i figure it can be done, and i ask because i was hoping to help someone else do it but i don't know squat about how youtube works. : )

I downloaded these tracks to mess around with. For anyone who is going to mix this: there are a lot of phasing issues with the drum tracks, so I suggest taking a close listen to that. The room tracks are out of phase with themselves. That needs to be flipped. I don't know if the snare bottom was recorded phase flipped, but to me it sounds better if I flip it. The overheads sound better to me flipped. But depending how it approached, you may get different results. Good luck.

That doesn't sound like Geddy's actual voice at the end, totally different register....the instruments do though, mostly. Copyright stuff, perhaps or pitch shifting? Peart used to play my high-school dances and the pubs in a local band called JR Flood and yes, he was a total MOFO back in those pre-Rush days.

I love zeppelin, listening to zeppelin as a teen, learnt half the riffs but Warren is right the overall mix of some zeppelin sounds old. If I have a big system running it sounds like I've tuned in to AM radio as opposed to playing the CD or Vinyl because there is no low end, it almost sounds high passed compared to even later 70s mixes mind 2000s onwards. Listen to Linkin Park (which is now 20 years old) and compare it to Led Zeppelin IV, sounds like Bonham is playing a 14 inch kick drum (except on when the levee breaks cos of that room sound) despite us all knowing otherwise, there is relatively no low end punch. Now imagine your a gen z teen and you grew up listening to distorted 808s and white noise hit hats....everything from the 70s sounds bandpassed.

@@lil-link I think he's saying that, when he interviews someone, his attention level is completely different than when he is trying to fit in mixing in real time while hosting a live chat. I could see your point if there wasn't tons of evidence of Warren being an extremely attentive interviewer in that particular setting. This video is a different animal. Don't let it get to you.
