I have never used the NLS Buss before, so I put it on my master going into the UAD ATR-102 tape & instantly a better warmth & sound. Thanks for showing this process.

Really helpful! I'm working on an early 80s-inspired project right now and am going to put this to use! I'm curious who this track is from by the way? It's awesome, reminds me of Siouxsie & the Banshees.

Michael White than you Mike. I couldn't find the track, maybe it isn't out yet. If you could tell me the name of the song I'll be checking their SC in case it comes up there.

Slaughterhouse is the name of the track. Not sure why it's not on the website. They did a whole CDs worth of material. I will see what I can find out...

Hi. Should i preapere the mix bus chain before i start mixing or in the end?
@good4sound4 жыл бұрын
Before. You want to hear what you’re feeding into it while you’re mixing. If you wait until the end, you will likely hear a drastic difference. Also, check the buss compressor every once in a while to make sure it doesn’t need to be tweeked, especially the threshold.

What about EQ (high shelf) before tape? )
@mixingwithmike9 жыл бұрын
Jenya Melnikoff Hi Jenya, Sorry I missed this comment from 3 months ago. It was a common technique to add hi frequencies going into an analog tape machine. The reason was that, over time, the tape would start to lose high frequency response due to repeated use and also the magnetic field on the tape itself averaging each other a touch. In a plugin, this is not an issue! Adding High frequencies prior, can add a bit more density to them with the tape compression. If it works, keep doing it! Cheers! Mike

Cool song and mix but sounded better without any plugins. sounded more real and open. less is more for me now. they just blur the sound and make the sound a bit more plastic sometime. I think its the kramer tape that spoiled it. neve console emu opened the sound a bit
@mixingwithmike9 жыл бұрын
***** Hey Patrick, Tape emulations plugins can be a bit tricky because you don't see the gain reduction from the tape compression you only hear the result. The Kramer Tape has a much more open sound in the high frequencies when set to 15 ips and Nominal Bias. Maybe you would have preferred that. All that said, I agree that unless the buss processing is making an obviously positive impact, better to leave it to the mastering engineer. Thanks! Mike

+Againwelived Every great mix engineer, I ever assisted for, which is a who's who of the Mixing With the Masters people. If you are talking about consumers, I would say that the perception a feeling one, not a knowing one. The "HiFi" community that spends $500/ft on speaker cable cares but is a very small demographic. Everybody else, just turns it off if they can't hear what is going on. Not sure if I answered your question, but that's the way I see it. Cheers! Mike

In the final mix that kind of thing makes a huge difference, probably people will not know what you did, but it can make more or less enjoyable... For example, if you're mixing a song to an artist that pretends to sound like 70s, if you didn't use some kind of analog gear or plugin emulation it will be very hard to get that sound.
