Hybrid studio setup is the way to go. I only use hardware for tracking, and then plugins for mixing and mastering. Works great for me.

Sound advice here and I just went through this process myself. Funny how I did exactly what your tips were. Upgraded my monitors, did room treatment, changed my interface to have some Ins and outs. Then created a mixbus chain. Funny enough, the first thing in the chain is a pair or preamps that have a "big" sonic signature. I went 500 series to create a custom chain using the functionality of the Fusion, silverbullet, and MBP as inspiration. I mixed/expanded the functionality of these boxes. So it goes preamps --> saturation box --> stereo compression --> 4 band EQ --> Stereo Image processing. Its working out really well.

After 15 years of mixing in the box, I added a behringer T1953 tube preamp to my Focusrite Saffire pro 40. It has a toroidal transformer used in high end audio gear and was inexpensive and based off what I have heard, it adds nice width, sparkle and warmth. I intend to use it mostly on the masterbuss, BUT I would like to try it when recording drum and run the Kick and Snare through it then into the saffire pro.

Very well done, DavidSJ! I think you're really on point about the committing to sounds bit. That was just how it was done "back in the day," at both the recording and mixing stages, because there wasn't really any other option. With unlimited tracks available and so many good virtual instrument and amp sim options these days, that willingness to commit to a sound has really become a lost art. Boy, that sounds pretty Boomer-ish reading it back, but I stand by it. :)

I would like to add though FMR RNC and RNLA are not plugins in a box. They are analogue comressors. They are controlled by software based controllers i.e to . The audio is never converted to AD or DA nor is there a "chip" inside to compress. These are VCA based compressors which are triggered by digital parameters hence the "warm" pure analogue sound :)

Thanks for all the great advice. I watched a similar video of yours on this topic, and it helped me to decide to go ahead and try my hand at hybrid mixing. I record drums in my small home studio, 8 tracks into my saffire pro 40. My mixes are not bad but always seems to be missing that warmths that comes with analogue gear. I get good results using Softube tape and other waves plugins, but just not quite the same. Before going ahead and spending big money, decided to dip my little toe in the deep end. Added a tube preamp.

When you use a preamp on your mix bus do you turn the knob (as on the Neve) to line level or do you use mic level? Second question. How much gain do you use on line or mic level?

Great video! I'm interested in the preamp to mix bus technique! I never thought of that! How would you set that up? Do you just run the output of the preamp into the bus compressor? Then run the whole mix back through the preamp?

Is there value in adding outboard preamps to a cheap interface (a Beringer UMC in my case) or would upgrading my interface have a bigger impact?
@MixingMusicAnalog2 жыл бұрын
Yes adding an outboard preamp will then take place of your inexpensive interface preamp so you will have some better results.

Hi David, what kind of a/d converter rig should I run for a 32 channel mixing board. I'm thinking of just stacking berhinger 8i8o converters into an adat to USB interface, but is there a better/more economical option?
@MixingMusicAnalog2 жыл бұрын
I dont think you will find much more economical than the Berhinger stuff

Really helpful, thanks a lot for this video. I have a question. I have a Neve mono channel. I would like to mix with it, not only track with it. Any thoughts or ideas how I can utilize this, possibly with stereo material too?
@MixingMusicAnalog Жыл бұрын
With 1 single mono unit I would not bother mixing with that. You want at least a pair and even then there is a ton of work around to utilize those in a mixing situation.
@thirdwise Жыл бұрын
@@MixingMusicAnalog Thanks for replying. I was considering trying to get another one, and then use the two as preamps on the mix bus like you recommended. Why would that be a lot of work? It's a Neve Portico ii Channel.
@kidsonicofficial7 ай бұрын
I don't necessarily agree with what David is saying. First of all, having to wait to print the audio isn't necessary nowadays. I use Ableton and there is a device called "External Audio Effect" which enables you to route your audio directly from the daw into the gear and back onto the channel, allowing you to have the hardware act as a plugin. Secondly, this eliminates the need for a patch bay (which for me being visually impaired is a good thing). Most interfaces such as the 18i20 have ADAT in and out which allows for an external preamp (or even an older interface with ADAT) to be used. If you have the outputs of the main interface going into the gear, and then out of the gear into the inputs of the ADAT preamps, you can then just route the audio directly. This is what I will be doing when my setup gets a bit of an upgrade.

You can buy budget gear, you just can't buy CHEAP gear. There's a difference. There's plenty of budget gear that holds up to gear that cost much much more nowadays.
