The Lab USA is BULLDOG Gin and Mixmag's weekly live stream and post-work unwind, where we showcase the finest DJs direct from our offices in LA and NYC. On Sunday April 19, we're switching things up with a very special Home Session from Christian Löffler.
This Home Session will see the German perform a live set. Anyone who's seen Christian play live will know of the melancholic atmosphere he creates through a combination of synths, dusty kick drums, bubbly melodies and woozy vocals. All of that's present on his latest album, 'Lys', which you can expect to hear in this set.
Christian, along with his Ensemble, took his live show to the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London last year, while also touring everywhere from Germany and Greece to the United States and India.
His label Ki Records has been the home of most of his releases since 2009, including four albums (plus a rework album) from his first, 'A Forest', up until the most recent 'Lys'. Ki has also welcomed the likes of Aparde, Hior Chronik, Stimming and Janus Rasmussen in the last few years.

Just go to one of his shows when its allowed/ you can! I went to a show he was headlining and everyone was a devoted fan! His live mixing in a venue is incredible too.

I was mind boggled the first time I went to my mentor's house, he produces radio hits for Universal. The room was barely treated and shaped poorly. He said "I know what the room does to the music, so it doesn't matter"... Still admire that, I still cheat with Sonarworks correction software which helps.

I assume the mixer is used as a control surface for 12 tracks in Ableton, where many sequences are predefined and controlled with the Novation, and that the drummachine sends audio and not midi to Ableton?

I was lucky enough to attend Christian's show in Berlin recently and it was incredible. Not only was everyone dancing and totally absorbed by the music, but it was obvious that his music means something deep and significant for most people there... something beyond words and unique to each person. It was beautiful to witness. I am so happy that in addition to these amazing videos, people are starting to be able to experience his music live again.

I like how he actually created a single track out of 8 tracks, you can't tell when one track ends and the other begins; everyone tries to do this as organically as possible but Christian certainly achieves it. Not only that but it's very entertaining to listen to how he also builds a layer on top of a prior one. Great set!
