Hello, when you show the overlapping Dmin pentatonic with the D mixolydian scale why do you refer to the E specifically as the 9th? I understand it is but isn’t it technically the 2nd? My theory is weak so I’m trying to wrap my head around these little things Cheers

I just found this video and the one on soloing over the V chord. Both really well done. There are so many approaches to this, including moving from the I, IV and V major pentatonic scales, playing the major pentatonic over the I and the minor over the IV and V, or simply playing all minor, as you point out, but your approach to weave the Mixolydian with the minor, is the best I have heard. Also, contained within the notes highlighted are the dominant 7 arpeggios, which I'm sure you discuss in another video. Great playing, terrific instruction. I've subscribed and looking forward to watching more. Thank you!

I tried to follow other guys tutorials about making mixolydian-minor- major licks but I failed as they explain and play with confusion! You can't even follow them what they play. You have just changed my approach for making me experiment with mixolydian blues licks! The idea is to understand the concept and enjoy it! Thanks a lot for this tutorial as you have opened the door to my mixolydian adventure! I haven't checked all your other videos but do you have some extended mixolydian boxes tutorials??? I think you should be in guitar player magazine with such tutorial, Martin!

Never thought of this mode to play on the IV chord! Thanks, Is it possible to play A mixolydian on the IV?
@GuitarBluesHury6 жыл бұрын

@yjmsrv6 жыл бұрын
You should be playing A Dorian (which is the same scale as D Mixolydian) over the IV chord- you "think" in D Mixolydian though. A Mixolydian doesn't work well over the D7 because the D7 needs a C for it's 7th Degree and the A Mixolydian has a C# (which is it's major 3rd)- so no it's not possible to play A mixolydian on the IV- actually ANYTHING is possible- if it sounds good it is good- but from a chord to scale matching point of view- it won't sound great. The scales that work over each 7th chord in a blues progression are these when viewed as the scales from the tonic- Mixolydian (over the I) - Dorian (over the IV) - Ionian (over the V). But it's important to think of the notes as they relate to the chord being played- not to the tonic. So on the I (Let's say in A) chord you play A Mixolydian- on the IV chord you play D Mixolydian (A Dorian) and on the V chord you play E Mixolydian (A Ionian aka the A major scale). Then every note will always be right- but remember- most bluesmen will just play the A blues scale over the entire progression- doing it the "proper" way will sound more jazz influenced- but when you do it that way you can also hear the changes as they go by without any accompaniment. Hope this helps!

It makes sense and goes over the chords well - but hard to make it sound bluesy... I'm trying hard to mix it with minor pentatonic and the A7/D7/E7 arpeggios. The journey continues... :)
@GuitarBluesHury5 жыл бұрын
Good idea using arpeggios. Try to focus in major 3rd... that's the bluesy sound. Thanks!

To my ear, the minor 3rd of the IV chord, aka F, is a clam in a blues solo in A. The minor 3rd of the I (C) and the V (G) are good, but F is to be avoided. When you are playing it in the scale here, it sounds ok because it sounds like we are in the root key of D, but it doesn't work in A.

So basically, your taking the A minor pent scale and adding notes from the D mixo scale with it?
@GuitarBluesHury5 жыл бұрын
Yes, A minor penta or D minor Penta (if you are playing over the lV chord) and add notes of mixo. You can try doing the same bit instead mixo you can use arpeggio 7th. Thanks!

Play the major scale of the I chord. If you want to think in pentatonic minor scales (I do), then play F# minor pentatonic (A major), over the E. When doing blues in A
@GuitarBluesHury5 жыл бұрын
Yes, another way to think it. Thanks!
@silasmiddeljans2682 Жыл бұрын
This changing of pentatonics is a way better approach because when you switch to the 4 chord the blues note is no longer b5 but a b9. With this approach you can jazz up the blues haha
