This is a great collection of songs, we nowadays call Oldies. When my radio station in the 70s had an oldie show, the songs had to be 10 years old to qualify, so still today I'm thinking of 60s music as oldies. And when I ask young people nowaydays, what they listen to and they say Oldies, I ask : which years ? Answer - the 90s 🤣🤣 Iron Maiden 1 was a blind purchase, I had read about the band and I liked the cover. When Bruce joined it was a perfect match for me and The Number ... still my favourite Maiden album. Whitesnake never made it into my Top 50, simply because for me Ian Gillan was the better Deep Purple singer and David's voice was never one of my favourites. In 1980 RTL Radio had a weekly rock show, where I heard many bands for the first time, because especially the harder stuff wasn't played on my local station. So The Spirit of Radio was my first ever Rush song .. a friend had the album and when I heard it for the first time with headphones, it blew me away ... the drummer ... something I'd never heard before ... and then came Moving Pictures ... still in my alltime TOP 3 of all albums and genres. Of Rainbow you unfortunately picked the "wrong" phase. Being a big Rainbow fan, I hardly could stand Graham Bonnet as follow up to Ronnie James Dio. Also the change of the music was ... ?🤔 Scorpions - what can I say ? Discovered in 76 / 77 Taken by Force is one of my favourite LPs of this period, also Animal Magnetism, when I saw them live. Still Loving you hit me pretty hard in a time of terrible heartache 😂😂😂 Fantastic song, the single was a big hit in France and rumour says, the birth rate increased pretty much in the following year 🤣 Sweet Emotion of Aerosmith was the first ever song I heard of them. My older brother bought some CBS sampler, with which they wanted to get more attention to several american bands: this was in 1975 and on the same album I heard Kansas, Journey, Blue Öyster Cult and REO Speedwagon for the first time ... wish I had this album nowadays Metallica in the 80s was nowhere on germany radio, I actually discovered them with the Black Album ... then bought backwards ... all the old stuff is better than anything which came later Motorhead's Overkill is another first time on this RTL rock radio show .... I was completely impressed, had to buy the album right away. Overkill is still my favourite Motorhead song. Also Judas Priest was on this show in 1980 and I bought Unleashed in the east right away ... still one of the best heavy metal live LPs ... for me 🤘🤘 The beginning of the 80s brought so much "new" music : NWOBHM, american rock turned towards AOR, Neue Deutsche Welle with lots of silly lyrics and a handful of songs that made sense, for example Nena's 99 red balloons. And there was the new wave of british electro pop ... but this comment will be continued in the Tears for fears video ....

With the exception of Rush, I loved all of these songs. Very accurate soundtrack for that era of my life as well. Great mix, Jim!

I used to love the Friday rock show, Tommy Vance was perfect on it. He used to finish off with Van Der Graaf Generator’s - Theme One, a perfect closing piece.

Episode 1 of the FRS… Yes in Concert at Wembley 1978.

Here’s a link to the Concert, repeated on the show… wouldn’t it be great if Jim did a reaction to this? Maybe even live!? At about..let’s say..at random.. 10pm one Friday Night? There are other versions of this concert which go beyond the 1hr 58 mark and obviously include more of the concert. But..in the spirit of FRS… kzbin.info/www/bejne/jHm0foFqq62sm6Msi=Egyf42irR-AORDqJ Many ITK continue to demand this be released as an official live album.

I remember the Friday Rock Show with great fondness. Tommy played some of the best music ever on the radio, for example Marillion at Reading 1983 and Iron Maiden at Donnington finishing with the definitive Seventh Son of a Seventh Son. Changed my musical outlook forever. We may never hear his like again.

FRS played a very early Marillion session pre “script” including Forgotten Sons, Three Boats Down from the Candy & The Web. All excellent versions IMHO. I have a link somewhere if anyone is interested. Also recorded it off the radio at the time and have a cassette version knocking around. Side B on my cassette was a session with Jethro Tull : “Minstrel/Valhalla/Chequered Flag” also from FRS.

@@gphill3954 I think I can remember that session. Tommy would play the bands that nobody else would and he was a big supporter of Neo Prog. I remember discovering the bands Solstice and Twelfth Night through his show!

@@gphill3954 Diz Minnitt I think yoiu mean. Tommy Vance and Fluff were to Rock music what Peel was to Punk. I always thought it strange that as soon as Punk happened, Peel turned his back on all the music he had been promoting previously. I mean I first heard Bon Jovi on John Peel Show and he liked them !! TV on Radio ruled though.

Good stuff Jim, not a fan of all of it, but the majority of it for sure. Also, I'm very happy to hear Aerosmith. I was going to write to you and ask for you to do a reaction to something of theirs in recognition of their contribution to music in light of them announcing their retirement from touring.

@JimNewstead Actually 10 to Midnight. Still have cassette of the very first show which was Yes at Wembley. Don't think the "turnover" went well for me. That said there are various versions still available on KZbin including a repeat performance kzbin.info/www/bejne/jHm0foFqq62sm6M and here kzbin.info/www/bejne/hWKyiHufh5yGgbM and even here (though a bit short) kzbin.info/www/bejne/mnPUnpaPqMt1l68 It was a BRILLIANT show (I wasn't a fan of John Peel I mean he played punk [he did Monday to Thursday in this slot for those who didn't know) and just hearing that intro from the The Dixie Dregs (Take It Off The Top) always brings back such fond memories,

Hi Jim, I was in my late teens then. We couldn’t hear that radio show but we mainly listened to two so called pirate channels, broadcasting from ships in the North sea, outside the dutch maritime border. National radio channels only played the very boring but very decent music of that decade. And German WDR (west german broadcasting) had a two hour radio show with only synthesizer music 😍. I went to Cologne a few times a year to buy music there. Much cheaper there (Saturn) and we had a great day roaming the city center. If you bought at least four records, the train ride was for free compared to buying those four in the Netherlands. I know every song of this list. Al great songs except, for me, Judas Priest. Don’t like the screaming voice of the singer. And Aerosmith…it’s good but overall I didn’t like them that much. Scorpions; great song. My favorite is The Zoo. And Wind of change of course, when The Wall was coming down You are more into trash and speed metal. I’m, still, loving the slower songs; like in prog rock or like The Zoo.

Radio ones rock show was massive for me too late 80s onwards....have to say likes of John Peel on radio 1 and other shows like the weekly top 40 .... Bruno brooks anyone?....way into the 90s introduced so much great (and awful tbf!!) music to me and I was doing the old manic cassette taping too every week. Then the 2000s came along and it was all Jools Holland for a bit. Telly wise it was Top of The Pops every week right up to then...and various bbc2 or channel 4 music documentaries over the years.... Glastonbury footage....etc Nowadays of course it's certain KZbin channels like Jim Newstead - you might've heard of him - that I tune into ...listen along and what not....for a good old listen of whatevs..... Not quite with a tape recorder out though. 👀👨‍🎤🤪 I think it's amazing we can look up the years album releases anytime we want - scroll through....search somewhere for a listen and get to it so quickly. Music is weirdly everywhere accessible yet so throw away too that the industry is almost endless seeming. It's less of a weekly ritual and more of a case of if you are addicted to music or not if you are going to find great things these days I think. That or you are lucky to be surrounded by music at home. Really don't go for the old Spotify browsing thingy...love the album form so much that I detest the shuffle button on my MP3 player!🥸🥸🥸🥸👀

You forgot The Old Grey Whistle Test, certainly for me one of the most formative Rock TV programmes, despite it being shoved wherever it could fit at the whim of the BBC2 scheduler. Was never a fan of Punk, so Peel never appealed post 77. Finally found another soul would admits to hating both Spotify and shuffle play, bane of my life !!!

No offense, but not my cup of tea. In my life, this stuff is what was blasting out of the boombox on the picnic table in the campsite next to mine for too many years. Everything had to be a head-banging vomit party. I did, however, learn to love Def Lepard and Metallica.
