I used to love this song when I was in college. I don’t think think I fully grasped the depth of it’s meaning back then. I forgot about it for a long time, but recently my dad passed away and this song came back to my mind. As much as I love this song, I wish I could go back to when I didn’t understand the grief in it. The Spotify version doesn’t do it the same justice, but I’m so glad this version is still here after all these years. The way he sings this version really captures the pain of losing someone beloved and the lyrics really express the complex feelings of feeling alone when someone is passing/passed away, the sadness and tears, the not being able to sleep but also the not wanting to open your eyes later and get up, loving someone so much you’d die for them, but having to decide to instead live on for them and believe in being with them in the next life, or believe that they are still always here with us somehow, still loving us and wanting us to smile. It feels like he’s singing from the point of view from the person who passed away to comfort their beloved person they left behind, which is comforting. But I can also see how it could be from the surviving person comforting their beloved one in their last moments. On a different note, I happened to see a recent live performance Miyavi did while I was searching for this video and wow, he’s even more beautiful than he was a decade ago!

I would really love for Miyavi to do another acoustic album. I love his new stuff and I think he excels at whatever he chooses to do, but I also honestly think acoustic is his absolute forte. He really shines when it’s just him and his guitar (and I guess a tambourine as it were haha).
