MIYOO A30 vs. ANBERNIC RG28XX - Which is the Best Retro Handheld?

Which one are you grabbing? The MIYOO A30 or the ANBERNIC RG28XX?

Thanks for the great comparison! For the prices I ended up getting both when they were on sale. Regarding each: Miyoo A30: - I'm a fan of the mushy buttons sonce they're quieter and comfortable to press. Personal preference - those shoulder buttons are so comfortable and easy to press. Wished more handhelds took note of this. Personal preference again. I played Epic Pinball (an old DOS game) and those shoulder buttons for the flippers are the best - bigger buttons, more comfortable, though i think if the 28xx had their directional pad and face buttons a bit higher up it would still work out well. Where they are right now the base of my thumb just kind of hangs with nowhere to rest - style points. Just love how it looks - Spruce OS is modelled after Onion OS I think, which is amazing to use in general Anbernic rg28xx: - slightly more powerful chip, but on a device like this with a small screen i think anything up to gba or snes is ideal though I do play PSP on it, which most games don't need analog stick - much better battery life. I never compared the two directly but the A30's battery seems to drain pretty quickly (Spruce OS vs MuOS if it makes any difference) - overall feels more durable. Once again just a personal preference. I'd feel safe tossing the 28xx in my pocket or bag but I'm cautious of putting the A30 anywhere else besides the case it came in. I think the screen had glass on top whereas the A30 is plastic(?) (well i got a glass protector for it anyway) Personal preference, I find myself bringing the 28xx out more just because of durability reasons but both are great devices and if I only had one or the other I'd be happy with either

Nice!! I love your detailed comparison. I agree with basically everything you wrote! I do got to say the Miyoo A30 knocked it out of the park with their color ways, but Anbernic kind of fell short. Thanks for the comment. Really made my day! 😁

For me, the reasons for A30 include: - Quiet non-clicky shoulder buttons - More comfortable buttons - Analog stick, while still being pocketable - General design + quality

I have the miyoo mini, what made me choose the rg28xx is first the looks of the cream white pink buttons one is just lovely, but I absolutely dig that it has hdmi out and despite it not having an analog, I manage to play Ocarina of time just fine, and since it has hdmi out, I can play it with a proper controler with analog sticks anyway. It plays psp games fine and Fieldrunners and Pixeljunk monsters are pretty much the only games I tend to play on this form factor. With MuOs it's amazing to be able to play great ports such as Axiom Verge and Iconoclasts. Last but not least the RG28XX has better battery life. I could technically buy the a30 for dirty cheap now, but I will pass on this one, as personally I am not so fond of the looks and design. The ergonomics on the RG28XX don't bother me much at all and never encountered difficulties because of the tiny controls, even with fast pace games such as Megaman X. Since I already own the miyoo mini, which I still play, I fear if I bought the a30, it would pretty much end up not being used at all and pick up dust. I may buy one however as a gift for a friend, because it's so cheap. If you can get it at a discount for 30 bucks, can't go wrong with it. However the RG28XX is just so nice to look at, I absolue adore its looks, somewhat reminiscing of the Bittboy pocket go which I love eternally and among my top favorite handhelds to this day.

@@Autotrope1. the shoulder buttons are beyond mushy and sensitive. If your barely rest your fingers on top you will absolutely have false presses 2. Fair enough 3. Though the size is better, the dpad is stunningly bad. False diagonal city. And having the buttons pressed to the top makes holding it very awkward

Software for the Miyoo is already fixed...by the community. Playing PSP without a joystick is crazy. That goes Dreamcast, N64, and some PS1 games as well. Now, if someone would make replacement for that god-awful joycon stick on the Miyoo and so many other cheap HHs, the retro gaming world would be a much brighter playground for everyone.

I like the rg28xx, but anbernic should've just went for a plastic version of the rg280m with the rg28xx chipset. Would've been better since the 280m has as joystick. Hell, if magic x can make a handheld the same size as these two with all your essential buttons and sticks, I fail to see why anbernic or miyoo can't do the same.

Id prefer the RG28xx since i don't feel like id need an anoloque stick i wont be playing games that might need it. The D pad is enough for a device this small.

Yes you can. I would suggest grabbing a new micro SD card, because these stock SD cards they give can be garbage haha

Both not good enough. Rg28xx has bad look and button design. Also missing bluetooth and wifi - making the hdmi out pretty useless. A30 is just lacking in Firmware and also Bluetooth/ hdmi out/ battery life / heating up / performance.
