The experience I have with these movements is that from factory they came unregulated and with poor lubrication. After 20 years of owning one, I took it to a watchmaker, he did full service on it and the thing was like within 2 secs a day of precision afterwards. Impressive.

I bought the 8215. I have it this previous Saturday for about 3 days and is only 20 seconds ahead of time. About 7 seconds a day. I was shocked to read the specs about the precision of the watch -20sec +40sec acuarcy. I Geus I’m lucky. And no stuttering secondhand movement so I’m happy about it

Curious as to how much the watchmaker charged for a full service. I have this movement in a $175.00 USD watch. So far, it is keeping excellent time. I don't like the manual wind feel, but the automatic movement feel/noise doesn't bother me at all.

It seems that the biggest issue of the Miyota 82XX series is simply that its a design from just about 50 years ago at this point. I like old-fashioned movements, so its not a problem for me, but I see why it would be a problem for others. The big advantage that this Miyota does have over the Seiko NH35, however, is that it actually has a glydocur balance. That means a lot if you live in places with extreme temperature like I do.

This is the absolute best movement that I have ever had had the pleasure of owning. I have not had any other movement that comes even close to the accuracy of this movement unregulated straight out of the box of several watches that I own. I have a Berny diver with this movement, and hits exactly at zero on the timegrapher in every single position possible, minus faced down. Faced down, it hits -1 on the timegrapher, and I have never, ever regulated the damn thing. I also have a Cadisen day date with this variant version of the 8215, and same accuracy. I have tested my Seikos, Oris, Orient, Longine, Tag Heuer, Omega Seamaster, and a couple of micro brands with the Seiko NH35, and NH34, and not one of those even come close! I have older Citizen watches with the 8215 movements, and they are rock solid superb! My Citizen Autozilla titanium 1000m dive watch uses this movement, and has withstood all types of beatings, and still keeps superb time. There is a reason why Citizen decided to use an 8215 movement on a $1200 Autozilla dive watch, and that is due to its robustness, accuracy, ease of service, and longevity. I have a couple of older Invictas with this movement, and they easily outperform any modern Seiko movement from my experience. There are a lot of fools that cry about the rotor wobble, and making a spinning noise, but they don’t cry when they own a watch with a Valjoux 7750 automatic chronograph movement, on which the rotor spins to no ends, and you can actually hear, and feel the wobble when the rotor is spinning with the Valjoux. I own an Oris Titan XL 1000m titanium dive watch with the Valjoux 7750 unidirectional winding, and feels and sounds the same as a Citizen… big deal. The Unidirectional system serves its purpose just fine in the 8215, and given a choice between an NH35, or an 8215, I will choose the 8215 any day. Matter of fact, I just purchased a Pagani Design PD-1685 Seamaster homage, and the options that come with this particular watch are the NH35, the Seiko Epson YN55 that come in some Orient watches, and the Miyota 8215, and I chose the 8215 without a blink of an eye.

I've got a ProMaster with an 8204 in it, and in the accuracy department, it's absolutely killing my Seikos. +1 after 16 hours on the wrist, but it does also gain 3 when sitting dial up on the table, which is still pretty damn good overall. Plus with the thick case of the watch, I hear no rotor noise.

From watch maker’s point of view - as I am watch maker - 8200 or8205 movements are used In citizen watch watches basically & they are very reasonably good when from factory assembly as once it is opened for services & touched with tools it May start give some trouble sometimes. It is delicate at escapement & balance wheel

I do enjoy winding the miyota, the seiko wind on the 4r I find to be a bit numb, the powermatic feels good, but a little hard to turn as the crown on my tissot is pretty small, it all comes down to preferance besides how much wear it takes under winding though, ofc. I really enjoy the uni directional rotor too, but I fully understand why some people absolutely dispice it as well. :) Especially in slimmer watches, I don't notice the uni directional rotor much in my chuncky promaster, but I hear and feel it a lot more in my laco aachen 39mm :D

Nice video, very educational. I was looking into entry level mechanical watches, and I have to say that Seiko makes very ugly (it's in the details) watches with 4R movement and a little better looking watches with the same movement but twice the price which I don't find any justification for. It made me look at different watches and I found Citizen with Miyota 8200. I think the "ugly" things about 8200 are acceptable trade-offs at this price level. I really appreciate your video, I was worried this movement isn't good.

I received a Boderry watch containing this 8215 movement, per the Boderry site. Lo and behold, the first thing this author mentioned is exactly what happens to my watch. Around the 2 o'clock marker, it seems as though the second hand "slips" or "falls", and for around 10 seconds acts unstable. However it does hold the time. Don't know about the author's assertion that it hacks. Mine doesn't.

I have a Citizen Promaster military style watch - 8200-S82175. It has the day/date complication. This watch does not hack. I understand the early incarnations were non hacking and later versions were upgraded to hack. The movement in my watch seems to have failed - the watch keeps stopping, even after winding and being worn for a while. Also, while it is running, it gains time tremendously. This seems to be a good time to upgrade the movement with one that hacks - but it's not clear how to choose one.
@SillyVintageWatches
@SillyVintageWatches Жыл бұрын
Hi James, Thank you for your detailed comment! The fact that it gains time quite a lot could be due to it being magnetized, but I am sure you might have already thought of that. Replacement Miyota movements can be bought on eBay or AliExpress for about $30 to $40. If you are willing and skilled, you could do the swap yourself. Otherwise, I am sure a watchmaker would easily do it for you and it would certainly be cheaper than a service on the original movement.

@SillyVintageWatches
@SillyVintageWatches Жыл бұрын
No worries, and welcome to mechanical watches! Generally yes. But let me give you a general overview: both hand-winding AND automatic watches are generally mechanical watches to start with. Automatic just means that the mechanical watch has the ability to "recharge" itself using the kinetic energy of your wrist. (so yes, you were right!) Automatic watches also have the option of additional hand-winding most of the time. (not the 7s26 f.e.) Oftentimes, people say they are new to automatic watches (because that is what they can read on the dial) when they really mean they are new to mechanical watches (non-quartz watches without batteries). Automatic basically is just another functionality of a watch, just like a date, a chronograph, or a GMT... Hope I could help!

I own an Ingersoll 1892 Scovill (i05005), and I find the Miyota 8215 movement just fine. The Scovill's hefty case muffles the rotor's sound, so I could only hear it when it was quiet or close to my ear. I mention the watch in the past tense because I accidentally dropped it, and now the movement is out of whack. I’m getting a new movement to replace it since I don’t yet have the skills or tools to service the movement myself. Anyways. Personally, I don't mind the rotor sound; I actually quite like it. Everyone has their preferences, but I'm not really picky. As long as something works well and looks good, that's usually enough for me.

I don’t understand at the beginning when you say it is easy to work on. The single bridge on top of 5 pinions (gear train and 2 from the automatic system) makes it very hard to reassemble. That is from experience but I am new to watchmaking however I heard the same from very experienced watchmakers.

I have the 8215 in a Timex Expedition North Titanium. Largely great time keeping I’ve noticed it keeps better time on the wrist than if you put it on a winder. Even so runs about +5 seconds a day when it’s not behaving. I’ve definitely noticed the stutter of the second hand which is something that I normally don’t notice until I do and then I cant stop looking at it. All in all I like the watch and therefore the movement beating at its heart. I’m weird but I like that it has shortcomings to the extent that it makes it feel like it has a bit of personality. It’s like its saying “I’m doing the best I can damnit” LoL

What I like with the laco is how true it is to its form being very very much a tool watch all out, but with great qc. But you do hear the rotor a lot in a miyota model, so if the rotor bothers you, I'd look at their pro line with 20 bar and sw200 or alternatively Stowa if you want a laco, because you want a pilot watch :D

Get the Daco. Look, I have a $1200 Citizen Autozilla 1000m titanium dive watch that I purchased back in 2004 I believe. The movement is still on point, and the watch has taken many beatings, and I just pick it up, give it a shake, set the time, and off it goes. Blows away most of my Seiko watches, and some Swiss watches. Now think about this… why did Citizen decide to use this movement in a $1200 tool watch???? They had plenty of other higher end movements at that time, but still chose to use an 8215??? The answer is very simple… it is a superb movement, tough, and sometimes even more accurate than most Swiss movements. When I am presented with the option to choose between a watch that offers to come with an NH35 movement, or a Miyota 8215, I will always, ALWAYS go with a Miyota 8215. Do you actually believe that Laco slaps in there any movement to just fill in the case??? Absolutely not. They realize the greatness of this little movement. The rotor spinning noise, and the rotor wobble also is a unique design of the eta Valjoux 7750 that is utilized in high end Omega, Tag Heuer, Oris, and many other expensive Chronograph watches, with the exact same unidirectional wind, wobble, and noise rotor as the Citizen 8215 movements. Don’t let haters talk you away from this little extraordinary workhorse movement. These little movements are super accurate too. You go get that Laco!
