Because it's not squared, Ludwig accidentally mislead her 😂 The 'carrot' just means "to the power of", and then the following number (in this case 2) is to what power you take it. Knowing this, it makes total sense why she was confused. But I do not get how she didn't know this notation. She said it was a language barrier, but I would assume in Germany it would be similar to the Netherlands, and here in the Netherlands we also know that notation.

If you grew up before that or the school system hasn't changed, then you wouldn't encounter it during standard education. I never see it written down on paper, because you can always just do the actual superscript. Similarly even if the system was digitised, many of them just let you use a superscript button. Calculators are pretty dependent on model. Most write it on the button as a superscript x, and if they are using pixel displays many of them will just write it as superscript on the display. In programming it varies heavily between language and context. It's common for it to actually represent XOR, and double caret is often used for power of (and many languages just don't support power of and instead expect you to call a method in the maths library). So pretty understandable that she might not have ever encountered it.

On 8th grade math : they charge 1228 PER DAY. There is no PER HALF DAY anywhere in the question. If Jimmy rent the car for 8.5 days he needs to pay for 9 days. The answer is 11303.75, not 10.689.75.
