Haven't realized this one in the past: Don't do water changes during the photoperiod or while the plants are running full blast as to not disturb/interrupt photosythesis from introducing fresh water low in CO2, differing temps or higher pH and other. Good point, thanks Mark!

The difference between a seasoned planted aquarium owner and a beginner is all in this video. You did not mentioned any of the chemicals used to fight algae. You went for equilibrium in the tank. There are 20 methods, seem a lot, but they do get the job done. Thank you for sharing from your wealth of experience. Awesome!🤘

Please please please make a video on the darkstart method. It makes a lot of sense but not many people (especially people new to the hobby) are aware of it. It would save a lot of folks the headache of battling alge. Also thank you for your tips&tricks and videos in general, you deserve way more views!

As Always great advice. back into this great pass time and already have 2 tanks fully cycled and a siamesse betta fish in one of them for over a month now and the water and fish are good and no algae. Howerver, plants are growing real slow but not sure about CO2 with the first tank with my Betta. I am thinking of adding this on a disposable kit for a couple of weeks but more info and maybe a link to one of your videos could make me more confident with adding CO2 as I am an old school fish keeper and this CO2 thing is new 2 me. Keep up the great videaos and like HippetyHop said dark starting a tank would be good to see :)

I must admit your video helped me to fight a very bad staghorn algae in my aquarium. I did 2 week of light off, few plants start breaking off but i replanted them again. I dosed seachem excel directly on staghorn and start doing 30-40% water change in every 2days and i have made my dosing lean instead of heavy. After a week all the staghorn died off and now my aquarium is happy again. Also all the points in the video also taken care

Great👍 :), only one point. Do NOT make Oticinclus, because of their "cleaning work", the first inhabitants of the aquarium, because the don't find enough "food" on the glass, plants and hardscape in a fresh setup.

Wait at least 4 weeks, better 6 weeks or longer with these fish.
@MJAquascaping
@MJAquascaping 3 жыл бұрын
I see where you are coming from, I would definitely not recommend adding these to a sterile new setup. For me personally between 3 and 6 weeks is when my tanks will have the most algae, so that's when I will ''use'' them. If there is no more algae available I will feed them sinking spirulina tablets.
@scaper-ny2ww
@scaper-ny2ww 3 жыл бұрын
This is just information about otocinclus that i wanted to share, because i heard it a few days ago from "fish tank shop KZbinrs". They are often used in the beginning of an aquarium aqainst algae, but then they don't find enough to eat. That's something, many people don't know.

Yes dark start Strategy. I work on the road with very little help for my tank's ( for the weeks away) I want to try plants but I can't care for it until it's on its own.(balanced). Dark start could be my key to best start up.

Very obvious ways. But always good of these reminders as I do get lazy periods. In a nutshell, excess nutrients lead to algae, so put in plants; change out water, getting rid of the nutrients that the plants don't use; and reduce ferts after trimming, again, as you have less plants to suck up those nutrients. I tend to forget this last one so thanks for the reminder.
@williammcdowell6257
@williammcdowell6257 3 жыл бұрын
50 years plus in the hobby, never heard of dark start, but makes sense. Beautifully filmed. Keeping most of the nutrition in the substrate also makes sense, I try, generally, to only add trace elements to the water column. One extra little point ref. seasonal issues, late Spring and early Autumn can be problematic with sunlight depending on room configuration, when the sun isn't quite as high but is out for longer and is quite intense, if it strikes the tank it can certainly cause problems. Great video.

Surface skimmer was a game changer for me. Mine hooks into the filter so what it skims is pushed into the filter. The filter does get dirtier now but is easy to clean. One thing to keep an eye on with the skimmer is that there is a normal flow of water, if you sed the flow has dropped, chances are a small leaf has been suckec in and is stopping the flow. Easy enought to switch off and clean with a small brush or your finger. Last point, remember if you feed your fish with floating food, switch the skimmer off or the food will get sucked in before the fish can eat it. Mine is on a timer and off during the feeding period for a few hours.

Just found your channel after researching the CO2 kit. You have covered the topic of Algae very well I will just add one more point. Diatoms (Brown algae). Usually, you get this in a newly set up tank it is doubtful other algae will be present. It is horrible slimy stuff. Do nothing it will just go on its own in about 2 weeks. You are right on consistency. When things change plants shut down until they adjust.

Lovely video MJ, your dark start method will also allow the tank to cycle thus reducing the amount of ammonia and nitrate. Although the plants like nitrogen through their roots, the leaves can suffer for some plants if you have too much ammonia and nitrate. I like cycling tanks before adding plants too.. although it makes creating content for my youtube channel more tricky haha

When I get in the aquarium hobby, I was looking for a big tank in second hand for at least 2 to 3 months. One day I got a complete set (a 300l tank, external uv filter, light, and some decorative stones) everything for 80 euros. At the waiting time I propagate 😊lots of plants out of water, out of water aquarium plants grow faster. Lastly 4th month I set-up the aquarium. I choose walsted method and every thing costs me less than 120euros. I will add fish later😊

Great video! However, not so sure about not fertilizing during the first two - three weeks. I also use a nice soil in my tank and skipped fertilizing during the first two-three weeks. Then I noticed nutrient deficiency on the fast-growing plants (rotalas got black spots/holes). Eventually I managed to fix it, but the bottom part of the plants remain with spots, as I trim only the upper part of them. Not big of a deal, but may be a lean fertilization in the beginning should do the work just fine.

Thanks for the informative video! I have a question about adding water back to the tank. When you mention adding back 50% of the water during water changes, do you add tap water directly to the tank? How do you ensure that the water added doesn't contain chlorine? I assume you treat the tap water to remove chlorine before adding it to the aquarium. Thanks for clarifying this, as I'm trying to figure out the most efficient way to do the 50% weekly water changes.

Hello. I’m keeping my acquarium 2 years. And all 2 years I have problems with algae. You tell that we need to use as much plants as it possible at start. Once I’ve bought lot of echinodorus. I didn’t know that they were grown up above the water. And I put them. They were melting and that created a huge level of organic with lot of problems

The algae series is literally a game changer. I’m doing my first high energy setup, had a huge algae breakout but that seems to have passed. Have a tank full of otocinclus, nerite and amano shrimp. I use an all in one fertiliser, nitrates are quite high in the tank. Any tips on that?

If your nitrates are quite high, you can either reduce the liquid ferts a little bit, or add some floating plants, they will soak up nitrate like there's no tomorrow
