wild catch fish are usually put on "zero diet" before shipping, this way they empty their guts before packed and pollution of water in transport is kept at minimum. Also when fish are exported, they are packed in 50-100 fish per bag, this been said the contamination of transport water is a real issue and the "zero diet" is a necessary process. Unfortunately as with all kind shipments, some kind of delays before packing and shipping often happen, and sometimes fish sit on diet for a little longer than usual. Next many fish have parasites in their body, that are usually kept in control by the immune system. The "zero diet" and stress of catching and transport is massive stress, which weakens the immune system. A weak immune system leads to a spike of parasites which kind causes the fish to fight against them and using more of the saved nutrients. Finally ottocats are food specialists and their main source of food is biofilm and algae with low nutrient density. After all when they arrive in the shops it takes a long time for them to fully recover, which is the reason why they often look skinny.

Are your oto’s not locally/EU bred? That’s what I was told when I bought them in my regular shop. After a few months all still alive. I have enough algea in the tank and feed sinking wafers for the pygmy’s. I see the oto’s nibbling from the waffers sometimes as well.

When I dirted my tank, I added balls of red clay throughout the dirt. That worked great. I've seen people adding an iron source in most of the videos I've watched. P.S.: you have a dirted tank, not a Walstad tank. There's a difference in concept (low stocking level, no added CO2, etc.)

I think aquasoil adds the nutrients directly through the water column while the dirted takes time to leech out to the water column since you capped it with dark substrate. So to keep the experiment honest, dont add ferts and see if the dirted will catch up with the aquasoil

I've heard even aqua plants prefer to root feed, once the roots take hold, I bet the deficiencies will go away in the dirt tank. I mean immersed plants grow fine in regular soil lol.

Gravel is to permeable as Walstad found out in later years. I'm told she modified her methods to less course substrate such as sand. Dirt needs to be capped with a deep sand substrate to protect water quality and prevent fouling the water. Using gravel turns a tank into an open sewer, the water flows freely through carrying waste and nutrients back into the water column, also no anoxic zones for necessary anaerobic bacteria. Nutrients in the water column are provided mostly by the fish but bio loads vary as does how many water column plants may be in the tank. Father Fish covers this on his channel, he's been doing it for 60 years

For the sake of the science experiment, I think you should continue with the aquariums as is, unadidated for a month, a month and a half and see real eye-opening results, then add according to their nutritional needs, but not without seeing those interesting results. Super interesting video !!. Greetings

For a potential next project, you should try a tank with inert substrate and osmocote root tabs versus a tank with something like aquasoil. I see alot of people using DIY root tabs over nutrient-rich substrate. Would be curious to see the difference!

yeah I would also like to know if i can get away with just fert tabs instead of buying expensive substrate. But, I wonder how expensive it will be in the long term. The pills dissolve, and I will have to use them, but how often? Maybe I should add 10 dollars and just buy some decent soil, instead of buying fert pills for a couple years. Another thing is how long the soil will last. It would be terrible to have to buy expensive soil every year... Do people have to change soil often and restart the tank?

Great video, and great comparison, I used to use dirt almost 25 years, only issue with dirt tank is when you pull out the plants and replant, depending on your style it does make a mess in the water column compared to aquasoil, growth plant wise they both work well. Can't wait till the next video

Great experiment video. You are right in thinking the soil for the "Walstad" tank is low in nutrients. From the beginning you need to use organic Top Soil. What you used is unknown, but since the water lily industry pushes fertilizer tablets, i suspect the soil is more of medium for ease of root growth and water clarity. With that said, you can still amend this medium. Get some different colors of clay: red, dark brown, and grey, {i get samples from clay companies } mix in a pinch bone meal and about a quarter to half as much of the clay amount with volcanic ash. This will give the roots everything they need via the bacteria in the soil. { this is another important aspect of natural soil, the waiting for microbes to grow to make the food for the plants.} if you want a bumper of fertilizer, but you might get an algae out break, you can mix in worm casings soil, { or really well rotted or aged garden compost.} After mixing; roll the clay into small balls the size of your pinky nail. Put them on a paper lined tray and freeze them. when placing in the very bottom of the tank, it's better to take out over half the water. How much to apply ? i usually line the whole bottom, but just placing around the root zone of the plants will work great also. This method gets better as the tank ages, since the bacteria are the main players here. Hope this helps !

I agree. There is a Father Fish formula for this, and you need to cap with two inches of sand to prevent the leaching. I add osmocote, iron oxide, blood fish and bone meal, seaweed extract, baking soda, lime, Aquarium compost and peat, with no leaching or spikes at all.

Yeah, it's basically natural compost vs cat litter with added fertilizers. I put some of our natural, red clay at the bottom, then mature compost (aged wood chips + chicken manure), then add gravel/sand. I like looking at the various layers up front as it lets me know how the anoxic layer is doing (as it turns a blue-grey) & the critters among the layers as well.

Hi Mark - reputably manufactured compost should have the NPK and the trace elements stated. Iron is vital, in hard water demands can be quite high, but Iron and light suits algae especially well, so care is needed. Low Nitrate leech into the water column is one of the advantages for using pond soil with gravel topping. Good luck.

Great experiment 🤙🏻. Yes nutrient rich Aqua subs give everything to the roots and maybe the potting soil is lacking so root tabs from the start or an ADA super rich substrate (JBL do and Aquabasis) layer with soil on top capped with sand. I know it’s finicky but it’ll still be cheaper than full aquasoil. With the lack of ferts in the potting soil then water column dosing is a must, even super lean will bring the fading plants back to life unless they’ve gone too far. Food for thought but I can see the potting soil with tabs and water column dosing working for 6 months or so before more root tabs are needed.

A tip is that use a T connection to connect the two CO2 lines. The upside is the both tanks get the same pressure and they should have the same diffuser then, so that one is not letting out the pressure more easily than the other. Then you do not need to try to try to get "almost" the same BPM.

I watched your original video on the set up and was surprised you used pond soil as I always thought that “aqua soil” was low in nutrients. As a gardener when I set up water features or small ponds the books say not to use garden soil as there would be too many nutrients and would cause algae and to use specialised aqua soil. Not sure if this helps or confuses matters more 😀

I would probably leave the tank for a few more weeks after which the nutrients in the water column should increase in the dirted but regarding the iron deficiency , I think almost 60% dirted tank owners add some clay into the substrate to help with the iron deficiency but I dose them manually. After a few more weeks the nitrates should increase but I'm not so hopeful with the iron , so you may need to dose some iron manually ! I'm still hoping the dirted tank suddenly goes crazy in a few more days !

I've not used "pond" soil (I believe this is what you used?) previously, so I can't speak to what's in it. I typically just use organic potting soil. I think the aqua soil is much better at releasing it's components, while dirt is more stable and will do so at a slower rate. End of the day: iron in the water != iron getting to the plants
@Dylan-ok6ft
@Dylan-ok6ft 2 жыл бұрын
Definitely treat them the same. Dirted tanks are usually low tech. So, it’s possible that using CO2 is driving faster grow that’s incompatible with the slower nutrient release of the pond compost. Perhaps the lesson learned will be aquasoils are better for high tech setups. 😄

My recipe is: Lowest layer 1-1.5 inches deep, of a homogenous mixture of, 2 parts unfired terra cotta clay hydrated to a warm peanut butter consistency, 4 parts clean silica sand, 8 parts organic potting soil for terrestrial plants. Miracle-gro organic potting soil or Happy Frog organic potting soil both work well. I mix these until the clay is thouroughly mixed in with the other ingredients. Regular potting soil will have time release fertilizer pellets, and sometimes water retaining gel polymer, so, it must be ORGANIC potting soil. I buy the sand as "playground sand" from Lowes, which I wash really well to remove fine dust. Be sure that the clay is a high iron regular pottery clay for spinning and firing. If it says "no kiln necessary", then it has epoxy or some other polymer hardener in it, and should not be used. Middle layer one inch deep. Equal parts sand and potting soil. Top layer 1-2 inches of clean silica sand. Your mistake was using water lily soil. That's really just meant to anchor the water lily down. Then you fertilize with water lily tablets. The manufaturers make sure that the nutrinent content is low in those products, so that people don't poison their pond fish with too much nutrient in the water all at once. Many water lily soil products are just a very expensive bag of old school kitty litter. The little-clay-bits kind, that people used before everyone started using the clumping kind. Some people actually use Walmart kitty litter which is just that same clay pellet product, in their aquascape substrates, but I have found it to be problematic, myself, for various reasons. I've tried everything over the years. Great video amigo

It's a little weird to see a dirted tank with CO2 injection. Walstad tanks are usually low tech. One of the advantages of the dirted tank is that as organic matter in the soil breaks down, it releases small amounts of CO2- not as much as you would get with injection- but enough to really support plant growth.

I'm not experienced in any way with planted tanks but i had an idea of what is happening. I think with the soil tank that black sand substrate is holding down the nutrients in the soil. Rather with the aqua soil it has freedom to leach nutrients in the water column. I think you should leave the experiment how it is right now and don't add fertilizer, and see what happens.

Cool experiment. Those endless are so pretty. Also, I was wondering, what do you feed your otocinclus? Mine seems to be rejecting everything I've given them apart from boiled cucumbers 🤷🏻‍♂️

I'd leave them since it is an experiment. If you add iron/nutrients you won't know which is better. Let them either fail or succeed and let us know what you find out in the end...even though I know it's hard...

Hello I'm still newbie and I have 75Gallons tank, is it safe to add aquasoil in established aquarium with 10 Goldfish on it? and by the way I bought aquasoil , for being excited I havn't ready the instruction in the back and I washed and rinse it for 7 times , after that when I read the packaged I just read that you don't need to washed the aquasoil. Can I still use this one? or I need to buy new one and put it in established tank wth goldfish?

What does the "dirt" bag tell about how much iron, etc is in the soil? If the dirt is lacking iron, then maybe you should supplement.

Try normal potting soil, the pond soil lacks nutrients because of water contamination. My dirted tanks are the best I have ever had.

i added magnesium sulphate, calcium hydroxide, ferrous sulphate, some humic acid and NPK before putting dirt in the bottom, then covered it with 1 inches sand...I observed great growth and colours, but carpet plants can't be grown by this method because of sand.
@FatherFish
@FatherFish 2 жыл бұрын
They can if you mix humus in the top layer of sand. Use 2" of sand as a cap and add the humic substance (leaves, small twigs, pond or creek mulch) to the top 1". Short root plants will grow in that environment.

Gotta love a dirted tank! Almost as good as aquasoil and far, far cheaper. And love those fish BTW (guppies breed like rabbits lol). Last thing is do you have any experience with chili rasboras, and if so, did you like them?

Don't add any fertilizer to the tanks. Give them the entire expirament time frame with just the soil for comparison sake.

My vote it to leave it as is. It will definitely recover if you add liquid fertilizers, but I feel like that defeats the point of the competition.
