Award-winning Film Bakala follows the story of Anindilyakwa man, Steve 'Bakala' Wurramara, who is afflicted with a profound hereditary neurodegenerative disorder. While modern medicine looks for answers, the stories of an ancient curse and black magic still permeate this remote Aboriginal community in far northern Australia.
Bakala enlists the help of his daughter to search for a cure from the traditional bush medicines in the land, desperate to find an answer before she too is diagnosed. As his desperation grows and his disorder takes an ever greater hold, Bakala realises he must fight this ancient curse to unlock the secrets of his Ancestors.
Bakala the Film was produced by The MJD Foundation. The MJD Foundation works in partnership with Aboriginal Australians, their families and communities living with Machado-Joseph Disease to provide comprehensive supports and engage in research, providing hope for the future.

I'd like to see some more evidence, especially considering that it is called '"Groote Eylandt Syndrome"... but I note that the MJD Foundation mentions that it is supposedly a link with 'Macassan people of INDONESIA' who traded for centuries before the arrival of the English... they have ruled out PORTUGUESE colonists (in Timor Leste) yet didn't say anything about the DUTCH who occupied Indonesia for centuries... or the belated ENGLISH colonialists here in Australia... so clever, uhh... I’d love to see the studies that eliminate the mine as the source of these neurodegenerative disorders. manganese dust and fumes would undoubtably be excessively exposed in Angurugu since it’s across the street.
