My dear friend filed bankruptcy in her early years. Many years later she was told no to a refinance because of a creditor. I helped her prove that the lawyer properly included them in the bankruptcy. What a mess, we spent 3 hours in an office copying 100 pages of document and it cost her $50 in 1993. She was lucky that the bank rep pulled her aside and told her off the record of why the refinance couldn't occur. She soon got the refinance, and kept herself employed and in good faith. Ps...she claimed bankruptcy after the company closed their doors overnight, she owed for minimal starter furniture, a car and some other bills...she was able at the time to make the payments and extra monthly.

A response I left for a similar comment: My relative does some work for various assisted living facilities and you wouldn't believe some of the stories I hear. Theft is rampant in those places, particularly towards elderly patients/residents with dementia or those with language barriers. I've heard of the nursing assistants/staff members wiping out elderly individuals' entire wardrobes... stealing jewelry and gaslighting them into thinking they lost it... stealing their spending money brought to them by their family (by lying and telling them they owe money to the facility). And it's not just one place, it's a widespread thing. Quite depressing

Sometimes people do it on the down-low and don't talk about it... and in other facilities, it's more casual and people talk about it like it's nothing. The issue is that no one really cares enough (or has the power) to do anything about it. Family members are busy with their lives. Employees want to keep working without ruffling any feathers. Higher-ups want to continue making money without any drama. So this type of thing will continue

Just an example of the way the system is stacked against landlords. It’s super unfair how difficult it is for landlords to evict dead beat tenants. Its one thing when it’s a large corporation, but plenty of middle class people have sacrificed to buy a rental property or two as an investment strategy and it’s these people who are so negatively impacted by the difficulty in removing tenants.

​@@truthspeaker1269 As I mentioned in my initial comment, this is a widespread issue. Meaning, it happens in nearly every facility (including the high-end ones that seem really nice). The higher-ups at these facilities all know it happens but turn a blind eye to it. Why? Majority of the staff/CNAs at nursing homes and assisted living facilities do very physically demanding, often degrading work (getting cursed at, harassed, getting feces and urine on them, etc) for near-minimum wage. So for the people who run these places, it just isn't worth it, financially, to hold them accountable or get rid of them. As far as a staff member reporting it to higher authorities, that's also unlikely. This is their source of income and it wouldn't be worth it to them to report that someone's hundred bucks or necklace went missing. For one, there'd be no hard evidence of any claims made. Elderly people with dementia 'lose' things all the time. Second, if the facility found out you went behind their backs to do this, it'd be the end of your job. So ultimately, nothing would be fixed and you'd be out of your job without a positive reference. Unfortunately, I don't think this problem will change anytime soon. Perhaps if someone truly spent the time to do the necessary undercover investigative work and made a documentary or something to gain attention

I'm a Case manager for an independent living waiver program here in Mississippi. I have lots of CNAs that work for me and if I found out one of them stole something, let alone a $15k engagement ring, I'd do everything I could to hold them countable. The judge did the right thing.
